Memory Box and Waterfall Album A written tutorial by KonaRaven
Memory Box and Waterfall Album Tutorial JUST A NOTE: I used a large Tim Holtz Collection Folio (12” x 9 ½”), which I will be detailing in this tutorial. If you are using another size folio you can easily substitute the measurements to fit your folio. You’ll want to first measure the length and width of the flaps where you will be building your memory box or boxes. Be sure that the width is measured from the outer score mark, which will be the score mark closest to the outer edge of the flap. The measurement of the flap for the large Tim Holtz Collection Folio is (8 1/8” L x 4 1/2” W)
LONG FLAPS 1) Cut (2) pieces of card stock to (8 1/8” L x 2 1/4” W) a. Score ½” and ½” again along the 2 1/4” W creating a ½” hinge, ½” wall, and an (8 1/8” x 1 ¼”) flap. b. Fold and crease the ½” marks 2) For the next step you will need a rounded corner punch a. Take only (1) of your card stock pieces and fold the ½” lengths on top of each other b. With your corner punch, round both corners out. This piece will be adhered to the outside edge of your folio flap and you will notice that the corners are rounded.
Long Flaps
Memory Box Short Flaps
SHORT FLAPS 1. Cut (2) pieces of card stock to (5” L x 4 ½” W) a. Score a ½” and ½” again along the 5”L creating a ½” hinge, ½” wall, and a (4 ½” x 4”) flap 2. On both flaps, fold the ½” hinges on top of one another a. Using your corner punch, round only (1) corner of each flap b. The rounded corner will be facing the outer edge of the flap
WALL RE-ENFORCEMENT I used chipboard strips to re-enforce the walls of my memory box along the long flaps. I would recommend painting them black if you are using black card stock. I did not paint mine. J 1. Cut (2) strips of chip board to (7” L x 3/8” W) a. Run score tape or glue (1) side of each of the chipboard strips b. Center and adhere both to the ½” walls, which is the ½” between the hinge and the flap. c. Paint them black or use another method to cover the strips. DECORATIVE PAPER LONG FLAPS 1. Cut (2) pieces of decorative paper to (8” L x 1 1/8” W) or (4) pieces if you decide to paper the INSIDE of the flaps as well as the OUTSIDE. I only papered the OUTSIDE. a. Center and adhere the (2) or (4) pieces to the Long Flaps SHORT FLAPS and RIBBON CLOSURE 1) Cut (4) pieces of decorative paper to (4 3/8” x 3 7/8”) a. Adhere (2) of your decorative papers to the OUTSIDE of the flaps 2) Take (1) of your Short Flaps a. Along the outer edge of your flap (which is the opposite edge from your score marks) find the center which will be at 2 ¼” b. Once you’ve found the center of the edge, measure ¾” towards the center of the flap and mark this spot with a pencil 3) Stack the marked Short Flap over the unmarked flap making them flush. NOTE: The decorative papers will be facing out with the black card stock facing in. a. Using a hole punch, punch over your pencil mark b. This creates two identical holes which should align perfectly c. Put and eyelet into each of the holes to re-enforce the holes or if you don’t have any eyelets then you can use hole re-enforcement stickers too.
RIBBON CLOSURE 1) Cut (2) pieces of ribbon to 11” a. String about an 1” through the top of the flap b. Run a 1” length of score tape close to the hole and stick the 1” piece of ribbon to the tape c. Run score tape over it again so that it will adhere to the decorative paper d. Repeat the process for the other piece of ribbon 2) Adhere the last (2) pieces of decorative paper to the INSIDE of the flaps covering the holes and the ribbons. BUILDING THE BOX 1) Run score tape over the ½” hinges of your Long Flaps a. Be sure that the (1) with the rounded edges gets adhered to the outside edge of the memory or collection folio b. For the other Long Flap be sure to adhere it above the score mark 2) Run score tape over the ½” hinges of your Short Flaps a. Be sure that the rounded corners of your short flaps are facing the outside edge of your memory or collection folio. FINISHING TOUCHES 1) Cut (1) piece of decorative paper to (8” L x 4 3/8” W) a. Adhere it to the base of the flap covering all (4) hinges
Waterfall Album SPINE AND COVERS 1) Cut (2) pieces of chipboard to (7 ¼” L x 4 ¼” W) These are the COVERS 2) Cut (1) piece of chipboard to (7 ¼” L x ½” W) This is the SPINE 3) Cut (2) pieces of card stock to (7 ¼” L x 1 ½” W) a. Cover one side of a piece of card stock in score tape b. Center and adhere the SPINE onto the card stock c. Adhere the COVERS to the card stock leaving a 1/8” gap between the SPINE and the COVERS i. Be sure that the top and bottom edges are straight and aligned ii. Flip the SPINE and COVERS over d. Cover the (2nd) piece of card stock with score tape i. Center and adhere it to the SPINE and COVERS 4) Bend your COVERS up and gently crease the gaps DECORATIVE PAPER 1) Lay your SPINE and COVERS onto a sheet of decorative paper. I used a 12” x 12” sheet. a. Measure and outline a 1” border around the entire piece i. The approximate measurement of your SPINE and COVER piece is (9” L x 7 ¼” W) ii. The approximate measurement of your decorative paper will be (11”L x 9 ¼” W) iii. Outline your SPINE and COVER piece onto your decorative piece of paper then remove them a) On the back of your SPINE and COVER piece run score tape along all of the edges and in the middle of your COVERS b) Be sure to run score tape down your SPINE and along the inside edges of your COVERS 2) Adhere your SPINE and COVER piece to the decorative paper ensuring that it aligned with the outline you drew
DECORATIVE PAPER CONTINUED 1) At the corners of your COVERS measure 1/8" gap a. Cut the decorative paper perpendicular to the corner ensuring you are leaving that 1/8” gap i. The cut doesn’t have to be perfect as long as your cutting the corner of the decorative paper off and leaving that gap 2) Adhering the paper: a. Run score tape over the: i. OUTSIDE edge of your decorative paper and along the ii. EDGE of your SPINE and COVERS b. Fold the long edges up first then the short edges 3) Cut a large piece of decorative paper to cover the INSIDE of your Waterfall Album and the SPINE and COVERS are complete! WATERFALL PAGES 1) Cut an A4 piece of card stock to (11 ½”L x 5 ¾” W) a. Score ½” along the 5 ¾” edge creating a ½” hinge and a (11 ½” L x 5 ¼”W) piece b. Now cut the card stock piece into (3) 3 ¾” W pieces i. Fold and crease the ½” hinges and your waterfall pieces will measure (5 ¼” x 3 ¾”) Repeat these step (2) more times until you have (9) waterfall pieces 2) FOR THE NEXT STEP YOU WILL NEED (4) WATERFALL PIECES a. Flip all of your waterfall pieces over so that the ½” hinges are facing up b. Align the (1st) hinge with (2nd) hinge making sure they are flush but not overlapping c. Using one sided adhesive tape, tape the hinges together in two places for stability d. Continue this process until all (4) are taped together 3) Run score tape all over the back of the taped hinges a. Center the Waterfall in the middle of (1) of your COVERS and adhere b. Cut (1) piece of card stock to (4 ¾” L x 3 ¾” W). Adhere to the COVER after the last hinge REPEAT THIS PROCESS FOR THE OTHER WATERFALL PIECE AND COVER OPTIONAL STEP 1) Punch out (16) 1” circles a. Center and adhere them to the bottom edges of your Waterfall
Decorate the front cover and your WATERFALL ALBUM is complete!
