Overview This course examines various forms of masculine identity across time and space and the social institutions, movements, relations, and practices that are built around these identities, by surveying the growing literature on masculinities from political economy and cultural perspectives. The objective of the course is to view masculinity as a fluid and socially constructed gender category and as a critical site of power that inflects and is inflected by overlapping political, economic, and cultural processes, including colonialism, nationalism, militarism, capitalism, racial and class discourses, and globalization.
