How to migrate from Aperture to Lightroom with an Aperture Library that does not use folders 1. Things to be aware of: a. Adjustments made in Aperture do not transfer directly to LR. i. We’ll export adjusted RAW files as TIFFs or JPEGs to work around this b. Metadata can be transferred (ratings, keywords, gps) c. We can maintain the organization from Aperture to Lightroom d. No idea what this means or when a solution of any kind will be available Steps for migrating from Aperture to Lightroom (Explained in detail in this video: http://youtu.be/fggWxBr-EuE) 1. Backup Aperture library 2. Create top level folder on Hard Drive for Lightroom a. Inside the top level folder create photos folder b. Inside the top level folder create catalog folder 3. Open Aperture (IF YOU USE FOLDERS TO ORGANIZE YOUR PROJECTS IN APERTURE, SKIP TO STEP 9) 4. Click the “Photos” option to view all photos in your library. 5. Create a smart album for All RAW Files b. Add rule > Filetype c. Set rule to Filetype is RAW 6. Create a smart album for all Adjusted RAW files b. Add rule > Adjustments c. Set rule to Adjustments are applied 7. Create a smart album for all TIFF files b. Add rule > Filetype c. Set rule to Filetype is TIFF 8. Create a smart album for all JPEG files b. Add rule > Filetype c. Set rule to Filetype is JPEG

9. Export all photos out of Aperture b. Choose Smart Album “All RAW” ii. Select all photos in album (Click a photo in the album, then use CMD+A to select all iii. Open the export Originals dialog 2. File > Export > Originals iv. Choose top level library folder (Created in step 2a) v. Set “Subfolder Format” to “Project Name” vi. Set “Name Format” to “Original Filename” vii. Set “Metadata” to “Create IPTC4XMP Sidecar File” viii. Click “Export Originals” c. Choose Smart Album “All Adjusted RAW” ii. Select all photos (Click a photo in the album, then use CMD+A to select all iii. Open the Export Versions dialog 2. File > Export > Versions iv. Choose top level library folder (Created in step 2a) v. Set “Export Preset” 2. TIFF - Original Size (8 bit) (Suggested) 3. TIFF - Original Size (16 bit) (For maximum color depth) 4. Choose folder that you exported all the Aperture images to. (the folder created in step 2a) e. Check the “Include Subfolders” option near the upper left of the import dialog f. At the top of the import dialog, change the import option to “ADD” g. Click the “Import” button on the lower right 6. Wait for Lightroom to build the catalog, and then you’re done!
