Workshop Descriptions Please take a moment to read the following workshop descriptions. From the three workshops listed, please select your top two choices and write them in order of preference on the next page of this brochure.
Workshop #1 Discovering Your Inner Beat Developed by: Lisa Fanaro Presented by: Frederick Fanaro & Janeen Sullivan
Do you march to the beat of your own drummer? This workshop will explore the world of sound and rhythm using the styling beats of retired professional drummer, Frederick Fanaro and tap dancer Janeen Sullivan. Participants will be introduced to different rhythms, sounds, and intonations as they are led through writing exercises that help you discover your own
“inner beat.” We all have our own independent rhythm that propels us forward through all of our endeavors; take this workshop and discover yours!
Workshop #2
Writing From the Body
Developed and Presented by: Karen Lee Lewis
Many of us learn best as visual interpreters. This workshop will explore the language of the body and the relationship of body to image. We will use photography to stimulate and investigate the body’s voice. James Wright wrote “that if I stepped out of my body I would break/into blossom.” Let us write from our body – from what Marge Piercy has called “this coat (that) has been handed down, an heirloom.” Let us listen to its natural history, its intimate and infinite voice.
Workshop #3
Exploring Creativity in Depth with Art and Writing Developed and Presented by: Linda Drajem, Colette Carse Gunther, Molly Flynn
(members of the Milkweed Collective)
Whether you want to stimulate your students’ imagination or your own, this hands-on program will promote accessing your creative potential. Using focused exercises to connect with works of art, you will activate your imagination to unleash your own images to create an artwork and also a piece of writing. This process has been used successfully with hundreds of adults and children for almost two decades. No artistic skill is necessary, just the desire to explore your creativity in visuals and in writing. While focusing on a work of art, you will be taken through a meditative/focusing exercise to stimulate the creative process.
