Presented “The Aesthetics of Hanbok Mirrored in High Fashion” for the first international Hanbok seminar. The presentation explored the aesthetics of Hanbok mirrored in the works of three High Fashion designers: Carolina Herrera (2011), Karl Lagerfeld (2016), and Jean Paul Gaultier (2016); at the same time touched on the issue of “cultural appropriation”: how transculturation in global fashion can act as cultural appreciation and avoid misappropriation and misrepresentation of the culture quoted. The seminar, sponsored by the Hanbok Advancement Center, an affiliated public institution of Korea Craft and Design Foundation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea, obtained its significance as monumental first oversea Hanbok education program by the participants who are in charge of Korean art and fashion in the institutions in the USA.

The essay was published in the column called “여성의 창 (Through Women’s Perspective)” of the Korean daily newspaper, the Korea Times San Francisco once a week for thirteen weeks. Keynote speech, “Crossing Boundaries: For the Awareness of East Asian Aesthetics in Global Fashion-Focused on Hanbok, Korea’s Traditional Dress-”, The 27th International Costume Congress, Hanseong Baekje Museum: Seoul, Korea (August, 24, 2016) Delivered keynote speech. In this an hour-long presentation, opened up the discursive discourses to set up underpinnings for better awareness and understanding of the aesthetics of East Asian dresses in the global stage with special focus on Hanbok: (1) status quo of the awareness of Hanbok: dearth of reference, mistranslations, incorrect display, wrong or missing narrative, and public misperception of Hanbok with Kimono (2) activities that I have done for the awareness of Hanbok in the US (3) analysis on the aesthetics mirrored in Carolina Herrera’s 2011 Spring/Summer collection, Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel Cruise collection 2015-2016 and Jean Paul Gaultier’s Hanbok dress as Haute Couture interpretations of Hanbok and Korean Art (4) issues of cultural appropriation,

misappropriation, and cultural appreciation (5) suggestions for Korean inspired fashion to be acts of cultural appreciation.

Oversea-project Coordinator for the Hanbok Special Lecture, Workshop and Seminar, Hanbok Advancement Center, Seoul, Korea (Jan. – Nov. 2016) On behalf of the Hanbok Advancement Center, an affiliated public institution of Korea Craft and Design Foundation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea, developed a package of educational program for holistic understanding of Korean dress: PPT presentation, workshop, modelling, exhibition, and scholarship support for future designers studying at world-class fashion institutes. Reached out to Fashion Institute of Technology(NYC, NY) and Rutgers University(New Brunswick, NJ) to implement the program. Organized a seminar, Soigné and Sustainable: Hanbok as Inspiration for Future Fashion for those who are in charge of Korean dress collection in the US museums and scholars whose academic interest lie in the East Asian dress or any ethnic dress.

“The Story of Closing Direction in East Asian Upper Garments” Presented a PechaKucha format presentation (20 slides X 20 seconds), The Story of Closing Direction in East Asian Upper Garments, for the symposium participants on the eve of GW Textile museum’s annual symposium. Given 6minutes and 40seconds, pointed out the distinction in closing direction between Western and East Asian upper garments and shared ancient East Asian’s idea in closing garments through the dialogue of Confucius recorded in Lunyu (論語).

Lecturer, The Asian Art Museum: San Francisco, California, USA (Sep. 20, 2015) The 7th Korea Day: Korean Traditional Clothing Talk and Demonstration Presented a talk in light of the proper way of dressing up the traditional Korean dress, Hanbok. Assist the curator for Korean Art in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco providing references, consulting, labeling and making descriptive notes on Korean costume collections. Consultant for Historical Costume: Drawing the Portrait of Dae, Jo-Young, the first King of the Balhae Dynasty to be designated as a Nationally Standardized Portrait ratified by Korean Government, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism: Korea (2009-2012)

Consulted with the research committee for the drawing of the Portrait of Dae, Jo-Young, the First King of the Balhae Dynasty (698-926 C.E.) which was hosted by the Institute of Culture, Art and Tourism in the Sookmyung Women's University, Seoul, Korea. Researched for the whole set of costume for the king’s portrait based on historical sources. Provided the set of costume for the model including the crown, the belt, and the boots within limited time and budget to enable the artist to complete the portrait. Helped with the consultation during the ratification conference held by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea for the portrait to be ratified as a Nationally Standardized Portrait. Published a report in regard to the entire process of the research and the construction of the costume.

Manuscript Reviewer: Korea (2009) Worked as a review judge for the The Culture of Korea [Hangukmunhwa] 46, a publication of the Seoul National University Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies. Reviewed the manuscript, "Round-Neckline Robe in Ancient Korea" for publication. Provided comments to the author to correct interpretational errors of historical records and to improve the logical structure of the thesis.

The National Folk Museum of Korea, New Gallery for “The Balhae Dynasty (698-926 C.E.)” (2000): Helped the museum make historically accurate reproduction of mural paintings for the life size modeling of Jeonghyo Princess’s tomb. This was prepared for the opening of the new gallery for the Balhae Dynasty. Seoul National University Museum, Special Exhibition “History and Consciousness --The Air of Koguryo” (2000): Led the costume production team for the eight sets of historical costume replica based on the mural paintings of the Goguryeo Dynasty (37 B.C.-668 C.E.). Replicated a set of helmet and armor from the third Anak tomb (357 C.E.). Seoul National University Museum, Survey and Preservation of the Excavated Costume from the Tomb of Suk-Myung Lee (1513-1583 C.E.) (2000): Participated a team work with members of the Korean Dress Research Group in Seoul National University. The War Memorial of Korea, Special Exhibition, “Search for the Balhae Dynasty--The 1300th Anniversary of its Establishment” (1998): Directed the reproduction of the three sets of historical costume selected from the mural paintings and the bronze statuette from the Balhae Dynasty (698-926 C.E.).
