SEMESTER ON ISLAND Most of a student’s time in the Marine Studies Semester On Island is spent in the field, in which the ocean, beaches, mountain trails, rainforests, and watersheds are the “living laboratory.” Curriculum includes coral reef ecology, marine mammalogy, watershed systems and ecology, research methodology, island ecology and sustainability, oceanography, Hawaiian and marine history, marine mythology, underwater photography, and so on. Through the mediums of snorkeling, SCUBA, sailing, hiking, and maybe even a little surfing and paddling, students work alongside scientific researchers to explore Hawaii’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Students in the marine studies semester program are registered as Maui Preparatory Academy students and, therefore, are eligible to participate in school team sports in the fall season (girls volleyball and boys/girls cross-country) for first semester students and in the spring season (golf, surfing, tennis, and track & field) for second semester students.
SUMMER@ MOANA For two weeks each summer, participants aged 12-17 come to the Moana Institute to adventure throughout the island exploring Maui’s extraordinary coral reefs, rainforests, and watersheds. Areas of focus include coral reef ecology, watershed systems, Hawaii flora and fauna, SCUBA diving, sailing, surfing, and stand up paddling.
Besides the participant’s age, the only other prerequisites are:
• The participants must have at least an intermediate level of English language proficiency.
• The participants must be able to swim.
• Participants who are not already certified in SCUBA will have an opportunity to learn SCUBA and earn PADI certification.
• The participants must have a sense of adventure!
