Mission Statement The mission of J. Sterling Morton Elementary School, whose culture unites families, guarantees all students develop the academic skills and character traits necessary for personal excellence and responsible citizenship through high-quality, innovative, engaging experiences in a challenging and nurturing environment.

Objectives ●

All students will meet or exceed district and state standards; the achievement gap between subgroups will decrease annually; and overall performance on district and state assessments will increase annually.



Each student will set and achieve challenging educational and career goals tailored to his/her abilities, interests and aspirations.



The percentage of students participating in and performing at high levels on measures of national and/or international educational excellence will increase annually.



All students will develop and consistently demonstrate character traits and positive behaviors necessary for personal excellence and responsible citizenship.

Based on survey results, identify additional or replacement activities that would benefit students. ● Girls on the Run, STEAM, Choir, Instruments, Swing Choir, WHO Club (We Help Others), Robotics Club, Writing Club, PBiS student leadership club, Chess Club, etc. ● Homework Help Club, Nature Club, Cooking Club, Spanish Club, Art Club, Book Club, Gamers Club, Wellness Club, Student Council, Walking Club, etc.

3.

Determine age appropriate options for existing and future clubs and extracurricular activities.

4.

Explore options for sponsorship. Options may include, but are not limited to; ● Staff Members (Paid) ● Staff Members (Volunteer) ● Parents ● PTA ● PAYBAC Partners

5.

Establish extracurricular parameters. ● Meeting times ● Curriculum ● Age Groups

6.

Evaluate on an annual basis.

Establish criteria for reteaching and enrichment opportunities. ● Using data that is analyzed three times per year ○ MAP Data, NeSA, Text Level, AimsWeb, Math Screener, etc.

Investigate opportunities for reteaching and enrichment. ● Vertical Grouping, Departmentalize, Reteaching Schedule ● Restructure and Rename Homework Help Club ● Increased instruction for HAL and other high achieving students

3.

Implement opportunities for reteaching and enrichment. ● Flexible grouping based on data ● Promote these opportunities on a regular basis

4.

Provide professional development for staff members. ● Monthly Staff Meetings, Fall Workshop, MLK Day, October/February Conferences

Based on survey results, identify additional or replacement activities that would benefit students. ● Aquaponics, Team Time ● Makerspace, Genius Hour, District Tech Kits, School Garden, 4H, UNL Engineering, Omaha Resources, etc.

Reevaluate the purpose of Team Time. ● Consider character education, sparks / student choice, or other options. ● Determine grouping and scheduling for Team Time (K-2 & 3-5 groups or K-5) ● Cross Reference Plan 3-1

Survey Morton families and community to determine communication preferences.

2.

Provide teacher professional development and training on social media and other digital tools. ● Develop a plan to implement social media platforms with consistency ● Define our building priorities for communication (which platform for what information)

3.

Provide opportunities for Morton families to learn about social media and other digital tools. Use Morton as a hub to provide training and learning experiences. ● While presenting topics, consider social media and digital safety (as needed).

4.

Intentionally recognize Morton families, volunteers, and community partners for their continued partnership with our school.

5.

Investigate options for outside speakers to enhance student learning.

6.

Evaluate this plan annually.

Strategy: We will capitalize on our tight knit community to effectively communicate and engage both internal and external stakeholders. Specific Result: Establish a committee to improve and promote positive communication among all stakeholders.

ACTION STEP

1.

Create a Tech Team to improve positive communication with our stakeholders. Responsibilities may include: ● Maintain volunteer database ● Assist with social media accounts (i.e. Twitter & Facebook) ● Development and training of other tech resources for staff ● Evaluate and select an online conference scheduling system

2.

Designate one or more staff members to be a liaison between staff and PTA ● Promote school-wide events ● Communicate volunteer opportunities and expectations

3.

Create a classroom survey for families related to volunteering. Use survey results to create a list of volunteers and areas of interests.

4.

Evaluate this plan on a regular basis.

Strategy: We will foster a culture of personal accountability which develops character traits that reflect positive social behavior and responsible citizenship. Specific Result: Create a culture for staff and students that highlights positive character traits.

1.

Purchase The Energy Bus for each staff member.

2.

Create a team to facilitate The Energy Bus activities ● Team will evaluate BIST data to determine activities.

3.

Provide professional development for staff members. ● Begin at Fall Workshop and continue in staff meetings throughout the year. ● Offer the a staff book study of the Energy Bus

4.

Implement lessons from The Energy Bus with students. ● Create a list of activities that will go along with The Energy Bus to work on consistently. ● Implement a theme that goes along with The Energy Bus. Activity will be based on the theme. ● Partner with families to communicate activities and themes.

5. Implement a “ticket system” where any student can be recognized by any teacher/staff for displaying positive social behavior. ● Pair Energy Bus skills with ticket system. 6. Evaluate the effectiveness of this plan on a regular basis.

Define and communicate the district-wide character traits.

2.

Utilize a data collection system in order to review behavioral data. This process may include, but is not limited to: ● Duration and frequency of safe seat ● Duration and frequency of buddy room ● Identifying most frequent behavior concerns ● Positive student behavior

3.

Provide ongoing staff development in support of our behavior program.

4.

Incorporate a bully prevention curriculum component.

5.

Implement an ongoing communication plan with our stakeholders (students, staff, and families) about BIST strategies and connection with school / home.

6.

Implement programs that support mentoring and positive relationships in our school (e.g. Team Mates, Watch D.O.G.S.).

7.

Provide staff development on how to promote coping strategies in students.

8.

Evaluate this plan on an annual basis.
