Martin and Haworth Family Papers
INTRODUCTION The Martin and Haworth family papers reflect the interests and activities of Zenas Martin, his wife, Susie Janeway Martin, their daughter, Evelyn Martin Haworth and her husband, Samuel Haworth, spanning the years 1875-1967. There is considerable family correspondence, much of it between the Martins and their daughter when Zenas Martin was superintendent of the American Friends Mission at Holquin, Cuba, 1897-1931. Many items relate to Samuel Haworth’s pastorates in Tennessee, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Nebraska and High Point, North Carolina, and to his years as professor of religion at Guilford College, 1924-1939. Both Samuel and Evelyn Haworth corresponded extensively with Friends in former pastorates, Guilford College faculty, and Quaker leaders in this country and abroad, chiefly England. A number of Samuel Haworth’s sermons and chapel talks as well as articles for Quaker journals and poetry are included as are Evelyn Haworth’s diaries and travel journals. Reports and documents of the American Friends Board of Foreign Missions in Cuba, 1897-1930, some in Spanish, are among Zenas Martin’s papers. Most clippings pertain to Zenas Martin or Samuel Haworth. Photographs include family, Friends gatherings, and many pictures of the Friends mission in Cuba. A collection of Cuban postcards reflects life on that island in the early part of this century.
