Edna Harvey Joseph Papers

Introduction These papers primarily pertain to Edna Harvey Joseph’s genealogical interests, but also include some personal correspondence. Her handwritten notes (many of which are contained in notebooks), pedigree chart files, and family history compilations (both files of pedigree charts and handwritten ledgers) comprise the bulk of the collection. The papers were given to the Friends Historical Collection by Willard Heiss in 1982, with additions in 1983. They occupy 7 record boxes and 11 document boxes. Note Concerning the William Perry Johnson Collection: The William Perry Johnson Collection (MS 531) contains several sets of notebooks that previously belonged to Edna Harvey Joseph as well as files of Joseph’s research notes and professional genealogical correspondence. A number of the notebooks originally belonged to Webster Parry and have additions by Edna Harvey Joseph. Several notebooks have notes added by William Perry Johnson as well and some pages were removed by Johnson and filed by surname. Effort has been made to have all these materials filed in Series V of the William Perry Johnson Collection. There is a list of items known to have once belonged to Edna Harvey Joseph that is kept with the collection papers of both Edna Harvey Joseph and William Perry Johnson. Biographical Note Edna Harvey Joseph (1890-1973) was a genealogist based in Jasper, Indiana who was widely known as an authority on Quaker family history. She worked with William Wade Hinshaw in the compilation of the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy. She also worked extensively with the research of Webster Parry, a Quaker genealogist from Richmond, Indiana, and acquired much of his materials. Many of her papers, including the Parry notebooks, were acquired by North Carolina genealogist William Perry Johnson. Her remaining papers were owned by Indiana genealogist Willard Heiss prior to donation to the Friends Historical Collection. Joseph, the daughter of Jesse and Effie (Roush) Harvey, was born in Markle, Indiana. She married Allen Jasper of Jasper, Indiana in 1927.

Pedigree charts, correspondence, and notes on specific families and topics. Apparently Willard Heiss organized the following materials while Edna Harvey Joseph’s papers were in his possession. It is unclear whether or not he was following a filing system established by Joseph or compiling information for his own use. Some additional materials located elsewhere added at the end of Heiss’s filing system. (3 record boxes) Box 15 A.

Webster Parry Collection of Quaker Families

Webster Parry’s genealogy notes hand copied by Patricia Kennedy Walker for Edna Harvey Joseph from 1966 to 1968. These papers were the set retained by Edna Harvey Joseph. A second set was retained by Patricia Kennedy Walker and later donated to the Henry County Historical Society. The later set was used in the 1980s to prepare The Works of Webster Parry with Additions by Edna Harvey Joseph, a 16-volume typescript set of the notes with index by Thomas D. Hamm and Mary Louise Reynolds. See paper file for copy of the introduction by Hamm and Reynolds about the history of Parry’s research and papers. Several of Parry’s original notebooks held by Joseph are now in the William Perry Johnson Papers (see Series V of that collection). Though there is some overlap, the ledgers contained in the William Perry Johnson Collection are not all the same volumes as the transcriptions retained by Joseph and the transcriptions include some ledgers that are not identified at this time in the Johnson Collection. Exact comparisons have not been done at this time. (1 record box) Box 18 1. “B” (4 spiral bound notebooks). See paper file for full index. 2. “C” (3 spiral bound notebooks).
