Date: 9/23/13 Lesson Plan Mathematics Multiplication

Grade: 3 Diagnostic Phase Analytic Description of Learners: • • •

Third grade class, twenty students -12 boys and 8 girls Different cultural backgrounds No evidence of disabilities.

Learning Standards Operations and Algebraic Thinking Students will represent and solve problems involving multiplication. Students will understand the concept of multiplication Content Strand 3.OA.1 Students will interpret products of whole numbers as the total number of products in groups. For example, interpret 5x7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. Students will describe contexts in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5x7. 3.OA.5 Students will apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply. Goal: Students will use different strategies to solve multiplication problems Objectives • • • •

Students will be able to use arrays to show multiplication concepts. Students will be competent in writing equations. Students will be able to use manipulative materials to apply different strategies to show commutative properties of numbers. Students will understand the Mathematics vocabulary.

.Entry Skills:

• • •

Students should know that multiplication is repeated addition. Students should understand how to write multiplication facts. Students should understand how to arrange objects in equal groups.

Elementary and Middle School Mathematics-Teaching Developmentally By John A. Van De Walle, Karen S. Karp, and Jennifer M. Bay Williams. Chapter 13, p.241 Smart board Book: Amanda Bean’s Amazing Dream, by Cindy Neuschwander. Pattern blocks Response sheets Activity Booklets Grid paper

Classroom Organization: :Large group and groups of twos and threes. Delivery Phase Anticipatory Set: Teacher will read the story. Teacher will question students about the story. For example, What math words did you hear in the story? Why did she change her counting strategy? Teacher presents vocabulary on Smart Board. Students will say the words with the symbols then match them. Direct Instruction:

• • •

Teacher will demonstrate a multiplication problem on the Elmo using multiplication and repeated addition . Students will then create an equation using pattern blocks and explain the strategy they used. Teacher will give other examples using arrays and include commutative properties on the Smart Board.

Guided Practice Students will create their own equations on response sheets. Cooperative Learning Students will be divided into 2 groups of threes and one group of twos. Students will be placed in different locations to create their own equations using grid paper. They will trace, cut, and paste equations Independent Practice: Students will reinforce concept taught by doing homework. Closure: Students will show their work to each other. Evaluation • •

Teacher asks question during discussion. Students complete exit slips.

Differentiated Instruction: Students will do homework and group work based on academic abilities. Follow Up Lesson: Students will practice multiplication using more challenging equations.
