The Envirothon is an annual competition in which middle school and high school teams compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. The teams, each consisting of five students from participating schools, home study groups and environmental clubs, exercise their training and problemsolving skills in a competition centered on five testing categories: soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife and current environmental issues. High School teams have the added component of an Oral Presentation that requires the students to assemble their knowledge of all the tested subjects and use critical thought to solve a complex environmental problem and present their solution to a panel of judges. North Carolina has a Middle School and a High School Competition. The Envirothon program is an effective educational tool, capable of supplementing environmental education both inside and outside the classroom. Led by a volunteer advisor, teams usually meet from late autumn until spring. Teams work collaboratively to develop their knowledge of ecology and natural resource management and to practice their environmental problem-solving skills in preparation for Envirothon competitions. Competition is open to Ecology clubs, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, soil-judging teams, 4H clubs, home study groups, environmental groups, Vo-Ag groups, or any group interested in competing. Teams must be from the same school. An exception is made for home study groups, scout groups, 4-H teams being from the same school; however, they must be from the same general area.

Take Advantage of the Envirothon Today! Both teachers and students enjoy the Envirothon’s in-class learning that combines hands-on, outdoor activities. Student teams are exposed to scientists and experts in the field who help to guide their learning experiences. Teams then compete in local Envirothons and winners advance on to the statewide NC Envirothon competition. The top placed high school team represent NC at the Envirothon competition, hosted by one of the participating states/provinces/territories in North America, where over $100,000 in scholarships and prizes are awarded.

Resource professionals help students learn soil structure, interpret maps, and evaluate land forms, and soil characteristics that affect urban and agricultural land issues. The students will gain an understanding of what an important ecosystem lies below the surface.

Students study marine and freshwater ecology to assess the quality of delicate aquatic ecosystems. They also learn to identify aquatic organisms, manage watersheds, and determine non-point source pollution.

Students develop an understanding of the practices for maintaining healthy forest ecosystems through the help of professional foresters. They learn the basics of species identification forest structure and dynamics as well as management approaches.

A favorite for many Envirothon participants, students learn firsthand from wildlife experts about animal populations, their dynamics, and the importance of habitat conservation. Learn identification skills used by wildlife resource professionals.

Challenged by field professionals, students work as a team to explore the facets of the current environmental issues and illustrate the complexity of real-life environmental decisions.

Teachers from science disciplines, as well as others who have a interest in nature and the environment, participate. Some involve their entire classes, others just advise one or two teams of five members as a club or afterschool activity. Open to high school, middle school, homeschool, 4-H, Scouts or other youth oriented organizations.

It’s exciting, educational and fun

The Envirothon is more than a competition. Together with teachers, schools and professionals, we help develop knowledgeable citizens who can make informed decisions that affect the quality of life in our communities. Ultimately, we are creating new leaders who will provide the vision for our future and well-being.t
