GRADE 9 AND 10 COURSES Academic and applied courses set high expectations for all students. Academic and applied courses differ in the balance between essential concepts and additional material, and in the balance between theory and application. APPLIED COURSES Applied courses focus on the essential concepts of the discipline, develop students’ knowledge and skills by emphasizing practical, concrete applications of these concepts and incorporating theoretical applications as appropriate. ACADEMIC COURSES Academic courses focus on the essential concepts of the discipline and explore related concepts. Academic courses develop students’ knowledge and skills by emphasizing theoretical, abstract applications of the essential concepts while incorporating practical tasks. OPEN COURSES Open courses are appropriate for all students. They are designed to broaden a student’s knowledge and skills in subjects that reflect their interests and prepare them for active and rewarding participation in society. They are not designed with the specific requirements of university, college, or the workplace in mind. The code contains an “O” for the 5 th character, e.g. TIJ 1O1. Selecting courses where students are going to be successful in grade 9 is important because this will build a strong foundation, both academically and personally, for success throughout high school. If you have questions or concerns about student placement, please speak with your student’s grade 8 teacher. Please give careful consideration to the ‘Teacher Recommendations’.
