Celebrating Women’s History Month at Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. – Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds (Asilomar) will present “A Legacy in the Arts” - the story of Carmel artist Jane Gallatin Powers and her legacy to great-great-granddaughter, Big Sur artist, Erin Lee Gafill. The presentation, scheduled for Sunday, March 20 from 3 to 4 p.m., traces Gafill's roots in the arts back to her great-great grandmother, Jane Gallatin Powers, an early California painter who owned Carmel's first art studio. The presentation includes more than 100 images of early Carmel, Power's art, and Gafill's own body of work—her own “legacy in the arts”. Erin Gafill is an award-winning painter, writer, teacher and a member of the Carmel Art Association. Author of the memoir Drinking from a Cold Spring, a Little Book of Hope, she grew up in Big Sur. For more than 20 years Erin has taught art workshops in the United States, Mexico, Japan and Italy. She is on the creative arts faculty of Rancho La Puerta, Tecate, Baja California, and Esalen Institute, Big Sur, Calif. The presentation is free of charge, but due to limited seating, reservations are needed. For reservations, please contact Lisa Bradford via e-mail at [email protected] or call (831) 646-6443 – please leave call back number for confirmation. A book signing will take place immediately after the presentation. Gafill’s memoir will be available for purchase at the Asilomar Park Store. Gafill’s presentation is one of the activities taking place at Asilomar in honor of Women’s History Month. A self-guided tour of Julia Morgan buildings will also be taking place on March 20 from 12 to 2:30 p.m. Docents will be available to answer questions. Participants are encouraged to make a day outing by having lunch at the Crocker Dining Hall or partake of lighter fare at Phoebe’s Café located in the Hearst Social Hall. Advance purchase of meal tickets is needed for Crocker Dining Hall. For more information, please call Janea Elliot at (831) 642-4268 by March 15.
