Winter Solstice Chilly days ahead ...

July 2010

The thermometer is dropping, the rain is falling, the first flurry of snow has struck. It’s time to get out the winter doona, rev the fire, put on a pot of hearty soup and curl up with the footy on TV. Or is it? Our Lyonville planning group has had a spurt of activity recently—see below for more details. And as you do your armchair planning for spring planting in the garden, why not consider opening your garden as part of a gardens of Lyonville fund raising event? The seeds of this idea still need a little work, but the idea is to schedule some local gardens to be open on a weekend in late Nov / early Dec 2010. More news once the details have been worked out.

Meanwhile, keep warm until our next newsletter in late August. The Lyonville Newsletter team

Community Plan Update The Lyonville Planning Group has been busy over the past two months: ♦ The Lyonville Events Group has been formally set up as an incorporated body—see article on next page for further details. ♦ Lyonville CFA shed—A couple of sites are being considered in liaison with the Lyonville Hall Committee. The plan is to get the shed erected before next year’s Fireman’s Ball to demonstrate the benefit of this year’s fundraiser. ♦ Support provided for the digital communications petition—more info overleaf. ♦ Michelle & Anthony White organised a sausage sizzle at the June Trentham Farmers Market. The stall was very popular and they sold out by the end of the morning. Along with the gate proceeds, about $900 was raised. The next meeting of the group is scheduled for 20 July at 7pm in the Lyonville Hall. Shirley Corneille on behalf of the Community Planning Group

Lichen flourishing in the damp winter weather

New CFA members in Lyonville On Saturday 26 June, six new Lyonville residents were welcomed into the local CFA team. Michelle White, Anthony White, Tony Corneille, Shirley Corneille, Matthew Doddrell and Ken Parfey completed training and passed their assessment and are now probationary fire fighters. The graduation ceremony was held by the Trentham CFA group. Whilst we hope we won’t need their services in the next fire season, it’s reassuring to know we have some local experts to help out. Congratulations to the new fire fighters and thanks for your commitment to helping the community.

THE SOURCE The Lyonville Newsletter Digital Access petition Anyone who has been frustrated by the lack of mobile coverage and internet access options in Lyonville will welcome the current push to improve our coverage. This was one of the priority action items that was agreed at the initial Lyonville Planning meeting in 2009. A petition is now circulating to lobby Telstra to improve mobile phone and internet access in Lyonville and neighbouring areas. If you haven’t already signed the petition but would like to endorse the idea, please add your signature to the petition. The petition is available in many local businesses including the Radio Springs Hotel in Lyonville, the newsagent, take away food store, and Red Beard bakery in Trentham, and the Daylesford Community Centre and Cliffy’s café in Daylesford.

Lyonville Events Group Following the great success of the Fireman’s Ball in March, a legally incorporated body has been created for future fundraising events. This will make banking and insurance cover easier to organise, and will help if we wish to seek grants from external bodies, who often require groups to be incorporated before being considered for funding.

Street signs at the cross road

The group can be used to coordinate fundraising for any purpose such as fire fighting, walking track upgrades, historical memorials, hall improvements. The first meeting of the group is on Tues 29 June when a Chair and other office bearers will be elected. If you wish to get involved or would like more info, please contact Tony or Shirley Corneille on 5348 5690.

Wildlife Watch—Who is this? This poor fellow drowned in a bucket of water that was left in the garden by mistake—he couldn’t climb up the sides! I’m not sure what sort of animal he is—I don’t think he’s a rat. If you know, please email [email protected] with Wildlife watch in the subject title. Thanks, Vicki
