NEWSLETTER - WEEK 2, TERM 2 Tuesday May 8 Dear Parents,Teachers and Students, STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics The Sydney Catholic Schools STEM statement aims to be embedded in teaching practice in the Sciences, Technology & Engineering and Mathematics. (STEM is not a new or additional subject). STEM is... authentic learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics through discipline specific or integrated approaches. It is outcome-driven learning that fosters inquiry, problem solving, critical thinking, creativity and innovation. It fosters 21st century capabilities and skills. To facilitate this at Blessed Sacrament, this week our students in Year 1 to Year 6 commence coding. Each week the students will have an instructional lesson to understand and use the software (Scratch) to create and communicate ideas and information, solve problems in order to accomplish specific goals; recognise, analyse, and correctly use the basic concepts and elements of computer programs, such as sequence, loops, parallelism, variables, events, conditionals and operators; and be able to plan, design, develop, test and debug reasonably complicated software projects such as games and animated interactive stories. On Friday we are also offering a Robotics session for interested students at lunchtime. The students' learning will be linked to outcomes in the BOSTES NSW Syllabus document for Science and Mathematics. Charitable Works Fund Appeal - Mufti Day and Yr 6 stall Thank you for your generosity last Friday, we raised $ 444.00 from mufti day and toy sale to support the Charitable Works Fund Appeal

Mother's Day Stall - Friday May 11 This Friday we will hold our Mother's Day Stall and as in previous years Kindergarten is organising this. Thank you to all the families who have sent in a gift (or gifts) to your child’s classroom teacher. (If you know your child wishes to purchase more than one gift, please send in the number of gifts your child wishes to buy. Class teachers keep track of the number of gifts the children bring in). Please remember to have these at school by Thursday. Suggestions: scented candles, hand cream, magazine, picture frame, chocolates, or something your would like to receive! All gifts are $2.00, so please ensure your child comes to school on Friday with enough money to purchase a gift or gifts for their Mothers, Grandmothers, Aunts etc. Kindergarten parents will set up in Lochinvar Hall and each class will visit the stall.

Reflection May is the month when we traditionally devote our prayers to Mary Mother of God. Please take time to gather as a family and pray. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you, Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death. Amen
After School Care at Blessed Sacrament - Update The delay in the refurbishment of the building, has also resulted in a delay in setting up After School Care here at school. The venue for ASC is in the lower section of the building to be refurbished and the refurbishment needs to proceed first and be completed before we are able to reconfigure the space for After School Care. I apologise for the delay, but it has been a drawn out process in getting the refurbishment project off the ground.

Dear Parents, Our tuckshop runs on volunteers and we are in need of bakers and servers for this term. Bakers We need three bakers every Monday. Each baker only needs to make 24 items (think small square slice, cookies, cup-cakes etc) can be packet or home-made – just remember no nuts! Drop them off at the tuckshop on Monday morning when you do school run. Servers: We need two people for morning tea shift and two people for lunch shift, so grab a buddy and come and see your children at play! All you need is your Working With Children (WWC) number and 60 mins of your time you’re willing to spend at school (sorry no small children in the tuckshop). Still undecided…the following are comments and recommendations from current servers and bakers. “What a great way to catch up with school friends” Year 5 Parent “It was fun, easy and over in a flash” First timer “So lovely to see all those smiling faces...they grow up too quick” Class 4 parent If you are interested, please email the tuckshop team at
[email protected] with dates you can help out. PS. Please send your children to school with low denomination coins for tuckshop, we can’t always change big notes.
