Newsletter Date: 8.9.17 Hello from the Principal Thanks to all students, teachers and parents for supporting Matific this week. Please see the insert below on progress to date. Well done to all students for a superb effort. The challenge is to maintain our current place until the competition closes at 2pm (Sydney, Australia time) on Wednesday 13th September. Special Matific Announcement We invite all students to remain at school on Wednesday 13th September until 4.00pm so that we can maximise the possibility of a Matific win. A note will be sent home on Monday seeking parental permission for students to stay with teachers in the Performing Arts Centre up until 4.00 pm. Afternoon tea will be provided to students. We realise not all students will be in a position to remain at school, and encourage those who can to join in the Matific fun.

We have been chasing an Australian School for first place most of this week, then today with a whole school team approach we gained first place. But not for long! As this school is 4 hours behind us they are managing to catch and exceed our collective efforts after school hours. We ask that students who have time during the weekend log on and complete set tasks. Parents, it is likely that you have received at least one email report of your child’s progress based on the tasks set by the classroom teacher. When you open the report you will see a summary something like this.
8.45am: Learning Starts 10.40am - 11.00am: Morning tea break 12.30pm - 1.30pm: Lunch break 2.45pm: School finishes We ask that the playgrounds are cleared by 3pm for After School care patrons. Second Hand Uniforms are available from the Boiler Shed. (Behind the Alfriston Community Hall, adjacent to the school)

WELCOME to new student, Joseph Croskery-Emery. If you click on the play button, it will open up the task and you can support your child to work through the concept and help them to understand. Another brilliant bonus of you opening these emails that are sent regarding your child’s progress, is that your child earns points towards first place. In order for the school to win this first place prize we are going to need to pull together as a team to take this prize out. Please encourage your child to access their account over the weekend to do as much as possible towards achieving this school target of 1st place. The more of us on at once, the greater our gains as a total are. #TheMatificGames #AlfristonSchoolMatificWarriors. CLASSROOM LEARNING:
We hope he enjoys his time at our school. _______________________
We were very fortunate here at Alfriston School to have people from Auckland Transport and Gleeson & Cox TRANSPORT LTD come on site to talk to classrooms about the road safety around large quarry trucks. Some children were lucky enough to climb up into the cab of the truck so that they could have the view of a truck driver.
Room 3 and 4 learned about the ‘Blind Spots’ of a truck driver. We got to experience how high the truck drivers sit and how it is important to wave to the truck driver before crossing to help them see us at a pedestrian crossing. Other interesting facts included the stopping distance of a large truck - if a large truck is travelling at approximately 15km per hour it would take 25 - 30m to stop once the brakes are applied! ALFRISTON SCHOOL OUT OF ZONE ENROLMENTS 2018 School Year The Board invites applications from parents who wish to enrol their sons and daughters at Alfriston School for 2018. Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available at the school office or on the website: www.alfriston.school.nz Applications can be made at the school office. Application forms also available on the school website. The deadline for receipt of applications is Wednesday 27th September 2017. Parents of students who live within the home zone should also apply by this date to assist the school to plan appropriately. The Board has determined that places are likely to be available across the school. If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, a ballot will be held on Wednesday 25th October 2017. Parents will be notified within three school days of the ballot being held. Jane Keys Office Manager
