Congratulations on advancing to Texas History Day 2014, the state level competition of National History Day in Texas. We look forward to working with each one of you to ensure that you have a wonderful experience at the event. We have enclosed the following materials for you: 1. Contest Guide. 2. DOCUMENTARY CATEGORY CHECKLIST    

      

  

Individual and Group (2-5 students). 10 minute maximum for presentation. Color bars and other visual leads will be counted in the time limit. 5 minutes maximum to set up and 5 minutes maximum to take down. 3 copies, plus one for you, of the following written materials:  Title page: list name(s) of student(s), title of entry, applicable word count, category, and division. (No school or teacher names. No illustrations, borders, or designs. No folders or cover slips.)  Annotated bibliography separated into primary and secondary sources.  Process paper of no more than 500 words, explaining how you conducted your research and created and developed your entry.  Extra copies of above-noted materials in case you are in the finals. Documentary addresses theme, shows clear focus, progression and interpretation, and demonstrates the impact, influence, or change resulting from the topic. Live student involvement limited to operating equipment and giving name and title of the documentary. Students may not wear costumes during the judging process. Names and addresses of all group participants entered in online registration form. Registration receipt and fees mailed so that they will arrive at the Texas History Day office by the deadline, April 1, 2014. Students may find out their judging time one week before Texas History Day by viewing the schedule at http://www.tshaonline.org/education/students/texas-history-day/home. Emergency kit: Bring an extra copy of your documentary in a DVD format. All equipment at THD is owned by the University of Texas; TSHA has no control over the software or hardware. If your documentary will not play, every effort possible will be taken to ensure viewing of the project. You are encouraged to make use of the equipment found in the room first, but to be prepared with a back-up playing device that you have tested such as a laptop or portable DVD player. Bring extension cords if using your own equipment. Come prepared to answer judges’ questions at the contest. Remember that formal narratives are not appropriate responses to questions. Individual and Group (2-5 students). No larger than 40 inches wide, 30 inches deep, and 6 feet high when displayed. If exhibit rotates, it must still fit within these measurements. Bring 3 copies (plus one for you) of the following written materials to the contest:  Title page: list name(s) of student(s), title of entry, category, and division. (No school or teacher names. No illustrations, borders, or designs. No folders or cover slips.)  Title page must include the number of student-composed words in the exhibit. Students should include the language “Exhibit contains _____ student-composed words” on the title page.  Annotated bibliography separated into primary and secondary sources.  Process paper of no more than 500 words, explaining how you conducted your research and created and developed your entry.  Extra copies of above-noted materials in case you are in the finals. Exhibit addresses the theme and shows clear focus, progression and interpretation, and demonstrates the impact, influence, or change resulting from the topic. Title is clear and visible. Labels, captions, and titles include no more than 500 student-composed words. Has visual impact.

Exhibit must not contain any firearms, ammunition, or any other type of weaponry. Exhibit must not contain any living plant or animal. Names and addresses of all group participants entered in online registration form. Registration receipt and fees mailed so that they will arrive at the Texas History Day office by the deadline, April 1, 2014. 1,500-2,500 words, excluding notes, annotated bibliography, and title page. Name and address of entrant entered in online registration form. Title page: lists name of student, title of entry, category, applicable word count, and division. (No school or teacher names. No illustrations, borders, or designs. No folders or cover slips.) Paper documented according to the guidelines of either Kate L. Turabian’s Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations or the guidelines of the Modern Language Association (MLA). Annotated bibliography separated into primary and secondary sources. Paper addresses the theme. Organization shows clear focus, progression and interpretation, and demonstrates the impact, influence, or change resulting from the topic. Registration receipt, papers, and fee mailed so that they will arrive at the Texas History Day office by April 1, 2014. Send 4 copies of your paper; OR 7 copies if you applied for a special award to TSHA by April 1, 2014. Students who make paper finals will be interviewed by judges at Texas History Day. Performance addresses the theme, shows clear focus, progression and interpretation, and demonstrates the impact, influence, or change resulting from the topic. All props and equipment supplied by student(s). Performers must not use any real weapons (even those that are disabled) or other weaponry. Only student entrants run equipment and are involved in the performance. Emergency kit: Spare script, items to repair the set or ripped costumes (safety pins, needle, thread, scissors, tape), and any other breakable items. Extension cords. Names and addresses of all group participants entered in online registration form. Registration receipt and fees mailed so that they will arrive at the Texas History Day office by the deadline, April 1, 2014. Individual and Group (2-5 students). All Web sites must be created using the NHD/Weebly portal. No print-outs of Web sites or CDs will be accepted. Only online entries will be considered. Students will be “locked out” and prevented from making any additional changes to their Web site after April 1, 2014 to allow for judging. Name and address of entrant entered in online registration form. Student’s unique URL code entered in online registration system. Example: http://www.12345678.nhd.weebly.com. Only enter the numbers into the registration system. As per the National History Day rules, student must include process paper and annotated bibliography as an integrated part of the website. They should be included in the navigational structure. No print outs of process papers and bibliographies need to be mailed to the THD Offices. Student’s NHD/Weebly username and password entered into the Acuity registration system. The home page of the Web site should include only the student’s name(s), web site title, category,division and a main menu that directs judges to each section of the site. (Do not include the school or teacher’s names.) All multimedia must be stored within the site; you may not use embedded material hosted elsewhere (i.e., YouTube, Google Video, etc.) Bring 3 copies (plus one for you) of the following written materials to the contest:  Title page: lists name of student, title of entry, category, and division. (No school or teacher names. No illustrations, borders, or designs. No folders or cover slips.)  Process paper of no more than 500 words, explaining how you conducted your research and created and developed your entry.  Annotated bibliography separated into primary and secondary sources.  Include applicable word count on process paper. Organization shows clear focus, progression, and interpretation, and demonstrates the impact, influence, or change resulting from the topic. No more than 1,200 visible student-composed words and no more than 100 MB of file space. Entries must abide by copyright laws. Only students who make finals will be interviewed by judges at Texas History Day. Students may find out their judging time one week before Texas History Day by viewing the schedule at http://www.tshaonline.org/education/students/texas-history-day/home.
