A pattern from The Double Nickel Quilt Challenge

Nickel in a Box Small Lap size 41” X 54 ½”

General InstructionsRead the complete pattern before beginning Use scant ¼” seam allowances (stitching is included in the ¼”) Cut all fabric pieces before sewing to save time Chain sew to save time and thread Press seams as instructed Guidelines for additional sizes are included at the end of this pattern

You will need12 fat quarters 1 5/8 yards backing fabric or size recommended by your long arm quilter 3/8 yard fabric for binding (based on 2 ½” strips) Batting Note-When choosing fabric, select fabrics that contrast.

CuttingCut each fat quarter as follows: 2-5” X 14” strips 3-5” squares

You will make 12 of the following block-

Blocks are 13 ½” finished. Note- Colors are shown for illustration purposes only. Each colored square represents a fabric of your choice.

Sewing1. Sew a background square to each side of a contrasting square from a different fat quarter. You will need 12 of this unit. Press seams toward square.

2. Sew 5”X14” background strip to each side of the 12 units from step 1. Press seam toward background strip. You have completed your blocks. They should measure 14”.

3. Sew blocks together in rows of 3.

You will need 2 rows like this. Press seams all to one side.

You will need 2 rows like this. Press seams in opposite direction of the other 2 rows. 4. Sew the rows together. The quilt top is now complete! 5. Layer your backing, batting and quilt top. Baste the layers together using the method you prefer. Page 3 of 4

6. Quilt as desired. Visit http://doublenickelquilts.blogspot.com/2011/01/nickel-in-box-quilt.html to see how the quilt in the pattern picture was quilted. 7. Cut 5 -2 ½” wide binding strips across the width of the fabric. Or cut the strips the width that you prefer. I use 2” strips. Fluffy batting needs wider strips. 8. Sew on binding.

Note- These are guidelines only. If you are making a quilt to fit a bed, it’s best to measure the mattress and its’ thickness to make sure the quilt will fit like you want it to. This quilt may also be made using scraps from your stash. The 14” strips can be made by sewing 3-5” squares together.
