Attention all Prescription Drug Prescribers and Pharmacists: Carisoprodol became a Schedule IV Controlled Substance under Federal Law on January 11, 2012. Carisoprodol is commonly known under the brand product name Soma. This scheduling change involves all products that contain carisoprodol, including those that might be compounded by a pharmacy. What does this mean for prescribers? a) All prescribers must have a registration from the Drug Enforcement Administration to prescribe the drug. b) If you stock any carisoprodol at your practice, it should have been inventoried on January 11, 2012 and added to the most recent controlled substance inventory. c) Pharmacies will no longer be able to refill carisoprodol prescriptions more than five times from six months from the date of issue of the order. This applies to previously issued orders that may still have refills remaining. What does this mean for pharmacists and pharmacies? a) On January 11, 2012, all carisoprodol in the pharmacy must have been inventoried and added to the pharmacy’s controlled substance inventory. b) All existing carisoprodol orders must have been issued by a practitioner with the appropriate authorities to prescribe a controlled substance in order to be eligible for refilling. c) Carisoprodol prescriptions are limited to a total of five refills, irrespective of how many refills were initially authorized. These refills must be dispensed within six months from the date of issue of the order.
