Hello,

SANDPOINT

I want to thank all parents who attended parent-teacher conferences and review the importance of post-conference strategies to help students be successful. Please keep in mind we are at mid-semester of the final grading period and we welcome and encourage communication between teachers and parents anytime not just during scheduled conferences. Here are some tips that will be helpful.

Students are encouraged to stay after school to get assistance from their teacher during Access time from 2:45 until 3:15 (usually teachers stay much later). This is a good time to get caught up from any absences.

Set up a designated study time in the evening to help your student meet deadlines and completes schoolwork.

Partner with your student to check progress for each class on the learning management system Schoology. Teachers will have grades updated each Monday by 4:00 pm.

Make an appointment with your student’s counselor for assistance keeping on track academically.

Help your student with time management skills. This includes making a daily to -do-list, limit the amount of time spent on social media, and make sure you getting plenty of rest.

Keep in mind that once we get back from Winter Break there will only be 2 weeks of school before final exams. This makes the instructional time in November and December even more important to make sure students are caught up with the required work in each class.

Thank You, Tom Albertson, Principal

WHERE - SHS Sources of Strength Connections with SHS Mentors October Topics: Trusted Adults and Positive Friends All students in our October 11th Connections Group named adults in our community who they could go to for help if they or a friend were struggling. Each student wrote the name of a “Trusted Adult” on a handprint. The handprints are displayed all over the hallways at SHS. It is a sight to behold. It is imperative that all students have at least one adult he/she can turn to in times of trouble. Many students identified their parents as the adult they would turn to. We each need someone we can reach out to during trying times. To launch our “Trusted Adult” campaign many of our staff gathered together during both lunches to “serenade” “Lean on Me” to the students. Needless to say they were pleasantly surprised – so many smiles and laughter! On October 20th our SHS Mentors introduced “Positive Friends” and breaking “The Code of Silence” to their Connections Groups. Each group brainstormed and presented to their group ideas about what makes a positive friend and how to be a positive friend. They discussed how important it is to listen, be non-judgmental, and to tell a trusted adult if they are worried about their friend in any way – breaking the “Code of Silence”.

College Application Week During the week of Oct. 31st thru Nov. 3rd all seniors had the opportunity to apply for at least one postsecondary program during their Senior English class. This was a great opportunity for all seniors to experience applying to programs to obtain a certificate, associates or bachelors after high school. We are thankful for the SHS counseling staff, college representatives, senior English teachers and our CARE parent volunteers!

Caring Adults Recognizing Excellence @ SHS Despite the few home football games this year, we had very successful concession season once again. Thank you so much to all of the parents who supported us by grilling burgers, baking brownies, collecting money and selling 50/50 raffle tickets. It takes all of you to make it happen! Also, a big thank you to REALM Realty who generously sponsored the Chuck Wagon for the final game at Memorial Field! We are continuing the SOM (Student of the Month) program this year. Each month nine students are selected for their positive contribution to SHS. We celebrate them with a pizza lunch, and honor one of these students with a sweatshirt, certificate and picture to post on the SOM board for the entire school year. Check out the honorees in the newsletter each month! CARE provided teachers with a midday meal during conference week. It is one small way we show appreciation and support for all they do for our school and students.. Thank you to all the many parents who provided menu items and money to purchase food, beverages and untensils! CARE exists for the purpose of supporting our students, teachers and staff at SHS. There are many events you can choose to be a part of throughout the school year. Join us in making a difference! You can contact us by email [email protected]

Sandpoint High

had several visitors from the state office of Career & Technical Education (CTE) and North Idaho College (NIC) on the last Wednesday in September as part of their tour of northern Idaho’s CTE programs. During the visit, CTE State Administrator Dwight Johnson addressed the issues of the perception of CTE, funding, aligning CTE with industry needs, post-secondary alignment, the CTE instructor shortage and future outlook of CTE in Idaho. One of the biggest issues CTE faces is a perception problem. Some parents, even some educators, see CTE as the last resort for students who struggle academically and not a deliberate destination for those seeking high-tech, high-skill careers. CTE can be the shortest distance between the classroom and a high-paying rewarding career.

“I love showcasing the amazing CTE opportunities we offer students. We have some amazing instructors and students. It’s always exciting to see what’s happening in the CTE classes,” said Alex Gray, CTE Coordinator for the Lake Pend Oreille School District. Sandpoint High offers students 9 CTE programs: Culinary, Health Occupations, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Business, Journalism/Multimedia, Information Systems, Welding, Natural Resources Management and Individual Occupational Training.

Interact and NHS

have co-hosted two gatherings for students to meet the foreign exchange students. The first was a potluck and campfire on the lake in September. The second was a pumpkin carving party hosted by Interact adviser Jeralyn Mire.

If you are interested in fun events like this, consider joining National Honor Society or the Interact Club.
