CS Lewis Explains Why We Honor Veteran by Donald R. McClarey (http://the-american-catholic.com/)

Sometimes simple questions can help illuminate great truths. Why do we honor veterans? Veterans Day was originally Armistice Day and was observed to recall the ending of that conflict on November 11, 1918 and to honor the American veterans who served in it. After World War II, veterans of World War I, many of whom had sons who served in World War II, spearheaded a move to change the name to Veterans Day to honor all veterans. Legislation changing the name of the holiday was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Eisenhower on May 26, 1954. All well and good, but why do we set this day aside to honor those who have served in the military? One veteran of World War I, CS Lewis, perhaps can help us understand why we honor veterans. Lewis served on the Western Front as a Second Lieutenant in 1917-1918 until he was wounded on April 15, 1918. Lewis, the future Oxford Don, was an unlikely soldier and he wrote about his experiences in the War with humorous self-deprecation. However, he had immense respect for those he served with, especially the enlisted men under his command, for their good humor and courage under the most appalling circumstances. His war experiences had a vast impact on Lewis, as can be seen in his fictional work The Screwtape Letters, where Lewis writes about war. In the fifth letter Screwtape, an experienced demon who knows well how to tempt humans into sin, admonishes a junior demon and trainee named Wormword not to allow the sight of human suffering, particularly in war, to lead him to believe that dangerous and difficult circumstances make his task any easier. The “Enemy” spoken of in these quotes is for a demon, of course, God. In war we may hope for a good deal of cruelty and unchastity. But, if we are not careful, we shall see thousands turning in this tribulation to the Enemy, while tens of thousands who do not go so far as that will nevertheless have their attention diverted from themselves to values and causes which they believe to be higher than the self. Most of us dread death. Members of the military in war time have to set aside their fear for causes greater than themselves. It brings to the fore that very precious virtue known as courage. We have made men proud of most vices, but not of cowardice. Whenever we have almost succeeded in doing so, the Enemy permits a calamity and at once courage becomes so obviously lovely and important even in human eyes that all our work is undone, and there is still at least one vice of which they feel genuine shame. In peace we can make many of them ignore good and evil entirely; in danger, the issue is forced upon them in a guise to which even we cannot blind them. This, indeed, is probably one of the Enemy’s motives for creating a dangerous world—a world in which moral issues really come to the point. He sees as well as you do that courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means, at the point of highest reality. A chastity or honesty, or mercy, which yields to danger will be chaste or honest or merciful only on conditions. Pilate was merciful till it became risky. We honor veterans because for a time they risked, or potentially risked, their lives for us. Not all veterans, of course, are heroes. That’s old news for most veterans, and most veterans who serve never see combat, but the potential risk was always there during their service. Consequently, all veterans at that point in their life personified the virtue of courage: the ability of we mere mortals to rise above our fears and terrors. That always deserves to be honored.

COMMUNITY NEWS Fun For Everyone at the Faire If you’ve never been to our parish Christmas Faire, come visit us, you won’t be disappointed. There are plenty of fun activities for all ages. Treasures are waiting to be found at the always popular White Elephant Room. Also, gently used and brand new jewelry are at great prices in Jewelry Treasures. The New England Country & Crafts Store will have an array of homemade candy, jams, cookbooks, hostess gifts, plus hand made gift and decorating ideas for the Christmas season. Look for one-of-a-kind handmade knit and crochet items for that special one-of-a-kind gift. Kids will be equally thrilled to find a gently used toy or brand new toy at the North Pole Toy Shoppe. The popular crafts and games for children will be back. And new this year, we have a Lego Creation Station. Build your own Lego creation to take home! Also new this year we will be accepting all major credit cards!! and as always cash and check are welcome. “Selfie with Santa”! Santa will be taking a break from his busy schedule at the North Pole and visiting the Faire on Saturday, Nov, 18 fat 10:15 am. Don’t forget to bring your camera to take a picture with Santa! Our popular clam chowder will be back—come early as it sells out fast. A new batch of clam chowder will be made for Saturday too. Come enjoy all our great food and homemade baked goods as you shop for great bargains and beautiful gifts. If you like games of chance take a chance on our Gift Baskets and Cash Prize Raffle—first prize is $500. There is something for everyone! The Christmas Faire has been a strong standing tradition for the St. Athanasius community for over 25 years. The Faire has grown over the years and now covers two buildings and has 13 areas offering everything from shopping to eating to playing. Monies raised over the year’s has gone toward parish work and outreach and to build fellowship and community. And any left over items at the end of the Faire are donated to charities such as Mission of Deeds and Good Will Doors open to the Parish Center this Friday (Nov 17) 4:30 pm for early bird ticket holders. Early bird is $10. And doors are open free to the public, including the Parish Hall, at 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Saturday (Nov 18) the Faire is from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Christmas Faire Raffle Tickets Christmas Faire Raffle tickets will now be available after all the masses thru November 16. If a table is not set up outside after mass, ticket sheets can be picked up at the table in the back of church along with a return addressed envelope. You can return your filled out tickets and money in the return envelope at your convenience by either mailing it to the church office, putting in the box in the back of church mark “Faire Raffle Tickets”, or dropping off at the church office. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Grand Prize is $500, Second Prize is $250, and Third Prize is $100. Drawing will be held on Saturday, November 18 at 2:00 p.m. during the Christmas Faire. You need not be present to win.

The Café: The Lunch Area is asking for help with donations of cases of water (16.9 oz size bottles only) and cases of specifically Coke, Diet Coke and Sprite. Donations can be put in the back of church after all masses during the month of November. Donations are being accepted thru Wednesday, Nov 15th.

Ornament Tree: A popular, fun, idea introduced last year. Faire goers can take a chance on picking an ornament that will guarantee to include a minimum $5 prize. Donations of gift cards for your favorite places (restaurants, icecream shops, nail salons, grocery stores, or other stores) ranging from $5 to $10 will be graciously accepted to decorate our tree. A “Ornament Raffle” box will be placed in the back of church for these donations.
