FROM THE PASTOR It looks like Thursdays during Advent are going to be broth days. It’s an idea from my spiritual director to add a bit of intentional penance in life based on the Church’s tradition of having a day of fast even outside of Lent. It’s, also, considered a new trend as a healthy thing to do. Go figure. Fasting once a week could be done anytime, of course, and we do tend to associate it with Lent, but Advent does provide a specific time to tighten up our spiritual life in preparing the way of the Lord. Typically, Advent practices are differentiated from Lenten sacrifices (though not exclusively) by improving or building on something positive, like adding prayer time, for example, as opposed to entering into a form of penitential denial. Nevertheless, it is also the case that sometimes improving on something can have a sacrificial dimension because it requires us to expend additional effort or maybe change our habits. I think this Advent is a time to do a little habit changing as a parish, which applies to me as well. It is just an observable fact that we (as in me) typically tend to start Mass a couple minutes late. There are several reasons for this, actually, not the least of which is the “Five Minute Fire Drill” that occurs when we recognize something isn’t ready to go at Mass time. I, also, tend to review or add to my homily at the last minute to tighten it up. Still another other reason, to be honest, is that if the church is only half attended at start time, then it’s a pretty discouraging sight when the priest looks out to make the sign of the cross. I know that feeling because we’ve tried this exercise before and that’s what it looked like! So, I’ll take the blame as being the efficient cause, to use a term, because I’m sure more than one person is thinking right now: “Yeah, but I know I have five minutes to spare because you always start late!” Fair enough and true, I could be greeting people at the door for five minutes prior if I backed up everything else. Of course, that wouldn’t stop the last minute fire drills or sparsely filled pews on its own, but it would break the cycle. It occurs to me that to anticipate or prepare for the arrival of someone, which is what Advent is meant to be in relation to Christ’s coming at Christmas, one has to be in place at the time of arrival. This could be said not just at Christmas, but every Sunday. No doubt this will take on a penitential dimension for everyone that likes the five minute cushion, but in this case the self-denial will add immediately to something positive.
Christ the King In a recent poll, many Christians of all denominations wanted to get more out of faith and were not quite sure how to accomplish that. They sometimes felt a disconnect between what they believed and how they lived. It wasn’t that they were aware of sin as much as they wanted to have a more meaningful connection between church and life. Jesus taught that we are to love God and love our neighbor as our self. Spirituality, then, is who we are in relationship to God and to others. To connect church and life, we need two things: we need to pray and worship God in a community of faith and we have to have a concrete expression of faith; we have to be different because we believe. Faith is more than an idea; it is a way of life that brings God’s grace to everyday situations. The Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy are examples of making the connection. They are specific ways to lend a hand, to express faith in God, and to recognize the value and dignity of each person. In practicing the Works of Mercy, we strengthen our faith and get so much more than we give.

November 26 ~ The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Today’s parable is one of the most vivid parables Jesus spoke. We will not be judged on the knowledge we have amassed, or the fame that we have acquired, or the fortune that we have gained, but on the help that we have given. The lesson is crystal clear - God will judge us according to our reaction to human need. This means giving simple help to the people we meet every day - to the hungry, the thirsty, the sick, the stranger, the prisoner – to Christ himself!

PARISH NEWS Dear Parish Family, We are happy to report the 2017 Christmas Faire was a wonderful success. Hundreds of people from the parish and beyond came Friday and Saturday to partake in the many festivities at our Christmas Faire. We heard constant feedback throughout the entire weekend from visitors about how they look forward to our Faire every year. Another told us this was the best Faire she had ever been to. Of course it is great to raise money for our church, but it is humbling to know we provided an evening or day of fun and fellowship for so many people. But this Faire could not have happened if it weren’t for the hard work of many, many people. We are so very proud of our team and the many people who volunteered their time throughout the week before and during the Faire to make the Faire run smoothly. We’d like to thank the following people: - To all the volunteers who sorted and priced thousands and thousands of items. What a job you all undertook! - To our amazing Food Team for buying everything we needed for concessions, setting it up, cooking and serving such wonderful food. - To our Wreath Team for going everywhere months before the Faire to pick up pinecones, for selling the wreaths, hand decorating the beautiful wreaths, and giving up your Black Friday to unload the wreath truck and distribute y our wreaths. - To the student volunteers who helped with set-up, take down, sorting hauling, and helping wherever they were needed. You were all a huge help. Because of you our jobs were so much easier. - To our adult volunteers who came out the help during the Faire doing whatever needed to be done. You filled a gap that made the days run smoothly. - To all the bakers who filled our baked goods room with delectable homemade treats. It is amazing how many baked goods are donated. All sell too! - To all those who donated to the gift baskets and created the beautiful and creative baskets. This year we had 74 baskets! - To all those who donated soda, water, gift cards and other donations. You heard the call and came through. - To the parish staff for doing the details, getting permits, finishing off gift baskets, setting up the signs, lights and decorations, and many more things. We appreciate your support. On a final note we would like to give a special thank you to the leaders of each of our areas (White Elephant, Country Marketplace, Jewelry, Knitting, Toys, Gift Baskets, Food and Wreaths) and their dedicated crew for their time months before the Christmas Faire coming to meetings and taking the lead to get things done. There would not be a Faire without you. Thank you! With all our appreciation, Joanne & Ed Fitzpatrick Michele & John Barrette Christmas Faire Co-Chairs
