Dear Friends, Google the word ‘saints’ or ‘all saints’ and if you’re not careful you’ll find yourself looking at the products of a clothing company! The biographical details or lyrics of a girl band from the 90’s! Or the latest news about Southampton Football Club! Look a little further and you might find details of numerous churches bearing the name or individuals accredited with the title. This month Christians across the world celebrate All Saints Day remembering and giving thanks for saints past and present. But, ‘What is a saint?’ There are quite different definitions of the word ‘saint’ – and many different understandings of what it means to be a saint. As we reflect on the question we might feel a little uncomfortable because the saints can seem awkward to be around. Holy men and women who are far too religious (or spiritual) to understand what it’s like to be me or you. They’re the superheroes. How can we

possibly relate to them? When in fact, the saints are often the very opposite of heroes. They come in all shapes, sizes and personalities and from all races, gender, age and class. What marks the saints out is not their shiny halos, or their perceived perfection… but something far more fundamental. It ‘s got lots to do with love and the power that love has… It’s got lots to do with being a sinner and realising it... It’s got lots to do with accepting God’s grace and letting his light shine through …. Basically the saints were - and are - men, women and children who long to know and love God better and long that others might do the same. They respond as best they can to the call to love and care for fellow human beings whatever that might mean they have to do. When and where? In the place, the time and the age in which they are called to be. We, along with those gone before us, can be, and are the saints. With all good wishes, Angela

BOXES OF HOPE CUMBRIA There’s still time to fill a shoebox for ‘Boxes of Hope.’ The shoeboxes will be given to a child who will otherwise probably have nothing this Christmas or last Christmas. They will be collected in early November (from St Mark’s Church) ready for our local team to hand them out in early December. An ideal box will contain…. Soap and a facecloth, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush/comb Notebook, colouring book, pen, crayons, pencils, rubber, ruler, pencil sharpener Hat, scarf, mittens or gloves, a pair of socks. Soft toy, knitted glove puppet, toy car, doll, skipping rope, yoyo etc Sweets (use by date at least March of next year), a plastic cup. But please NO food (except for sweets) and no medicines, aerosols, liquids (shampoo, shower gel, bubbles), glass or fragile or sharp items. THERE IS SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON FUN THIS YEAR AND SWEETS AND TOY CARS ARE PARTICULARLY INVITED. Last year we had a box-filling session in the Vestry and filled lots of extra boxes. Why not come along and help? The session will take place on Tuesday 1st November at 3.30 -5pm in The Vestry. All are welcome.

Our supper, auction of fresh produce and additional donations (at the last count) raised over £500.00 for the Bishop of Carlisle’s Harvest Appeal supporting projects and people in Argentina and Mali.

17th ANNUAL CRAFT FAIR AND EXHIBITION This years Craft Fair and Exhibition will take place on Saturday 5 th November in the Natland and Oxenholme Village Hall from 10am to 4pm. The event raises funds for the Village Hall. A popular and important part of the day is the Exhibition of Craft in the Small Hall where there is a display of items made by local residents and loaned for the event. Offers of exhibits are invited. Your contact is Elspeth Jayne (015395 60942 or [email protected]) if you wish to take part. In the Large Hall, there will be 23 stalls each selling a variety of crafts made locally. Refreshments will be available all day and there will also be a raffle.

to all who supported the Vestry Coffee Morning with Charity Christmas Card & Book Sale. A total of £167.68 was raised towards the roof fund and at the last count £228.59 was raised through the sale of cards (and puddings) which will go to the appropriate charities.

Natland Young at Heart Social Group for older residents runs at Natland Village Hall. The group will next meet on Monday 14th November from 1.45- 3.45pm when we will be having an afternoon of Christmas crafts.

Men U Can Cook! A Cookery Course just for Men! Would you like to learn how to cook some simple healthy meals and be a bit more confident in the kitchen? Then come along to our cookery course. It will be fun, relaxed and informal. Each week you will help prepare some simple meals, taste the end results and take home the recipes. It is to be held at the Athenaeum in Heversham on Friday 18th, 25th November and 2nd & 9th December from 1.30 - 3.30 pm. Cost is £15 for the 4 weeks payable at the first session and you must be able to attend all four sessions. Gentle Exercise Class at Endmoor Village Hall every Tuesday at 10.30am. It is a fun class, predominantly chair based lasting for about 40 mins followed by tea and chat. Come and give it a go!

Advent

Advent begins this year on Sunday 27th November. It’s an important time of year in which to take time to stop, to think and to pray - even if it does feel like we should be rushing around getting ready for Christmas.

At St Mark’s we’ll be meeting each Friday evening for Compline (Night Prayer) beginning on Friday 25th November from 6 6.30pm in church - a quiet service with prayers and reflection. Why not come along? And/or you might like to read a book for Advent? If yes, then how about ‘A Little Book of Advent.’ It is available in paperback or to read on kindle etc and includes a brief reflection and prayer for each day.

Our special thanks to Graham Needham for many years of service to our community through the Post Office and Village Shop. Graham we wish you and Liz a long and happy retirement. Thank you to Mavis too and we wish you a long and happy retirement also.

Continuing our series of articles from the World War One Exhibition by John Chandler………

Charles Wyndham Wilson Charles Wyndham Wilson was the Great Uncle of Michael Green. Michael now lives at Penwortham but his family have strong links to our community. Charles was born in the autumn of 1894 at Oxenholme. His parents were William James (48 at the time), and Sarah Jane Rachel Wilson (aged 33 at the time) but more often known as Rachel. The family lived at High Park, Oxenholme. Charles was the fourth of five children two sisters Augusta and Frances and three brothers Noel, Arthur and himself. The Wilson Family were a very prominent family in the area and also big landowners. Though the family had previously lived at Oxenholme House they continued to live at High Park into the 1920’s. The main house at High Park, in which the family lived, is in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Holy Trinity, Kendal whilst the Lodge at the bottom of the drive is in the Parish of St Mark's. Charles was a Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion the Border Regiment. At the outbreak of war on the 4th August 1914 the battalion were stationed at Pembroke Dock one of three regular battalions permanently stationed in the United Kingdom. The battalion was embarked for Belgium on the 6th October 1914 as part of the 20th Brigade, 7th Division. Within three days they were involved in the defence of Antwerp but overwhelmed by a larger force they withdrew to Ypres where from the 19th October to the 21st and then the 29th October they fought in what is known as the First Battle of Ypres. Charles and his unit would have been involved in the famous Christmas Truce. An early battle of 1915 was the British and Indian attack on Neuve Chapelle which raged from the 10th to the 13th March. It is here that Charles was killed on the 12 th March 1915 aged 20yrs. Of 40,000 troops committed to the battle Charles was one of over 11,000 who were killed or wounded. It is believed his mother applied in 1920 for his medals which the family would have received. These were the 1914-15 Star, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal. These three medals were irreverently known as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred. (Continued on page 11)

Charles has no known grave but his name is recorded on the Le Touret Memorial which is a few miles to the east and north of Bethune in the Pas de Calais area. There are 13,400 names listed on the Memorial of men, like Charles, who fell in this area before the 25th Sept 1915, and similarly have no known grave. The name of Charles Wyndham Wilson is on the Kendal War Memorial. Michael Green’s Great Aunt Mabel married Arthur the younger brother of Charles in the early 1920’s. This family association with St. Mark’s has allowed his name to be read out at the annual St. Mark’s Service of Remembrance. John Chandler.

ALTAR FLOWER ROTA Thank you to everyone who helps to beautify the church with flowers. A new rota will soon appear on the noticeboard for the flowers for next year. If you would like to pay for the flowers but not arrange them please speak to Rev Angela who will put you in touch with someone who could arrange the flowers on your behalf.

In the Lady Chapel there are vases where flowers can be placed at any time of year in remembrance of a loved one. Simply place the flowers there on the appropriate date. “I have a problem with rising damp in my flat, but I’m worried that if I complain my landlord will evict me. What should I do?” Landlords used to be allowed to evict tenants without a reason, but for tenancies starting on or after 1 October 2015 it is illegal to evict tenants for reporting a problem, provided they use the right procedure. Write to your landlord explaining what is wrong. If they don’t respond within 14 days, or they issue an eviction notice, contact the Council, who will inspect the property. If the Council confirm that there is a health and safety issue, any eviction notice is invalid. They will also ensure that the landlord fixes the problem. If your tenancy began earlier, don't despair – contact your local Citizens Advice for advice on the action to take.

CHURCHYARD MOWER – HELP WANTED The church owns two Torro mowing machines and earlier this year David Aris did an excellent job helping to renovate one of the machines after the body had been welded professionally and we are grateful to him for his work. Whilst the body had rusted the motor was, and is still, in excellent working order. The machine is nearly as good as new now and should offer service for many years to come. The second machine needs similar treatment which requires the motor, wheels and controls to be stripped down from the body and then re-assembled after the body has been sent away for welding. Is there someone of a mechanical bent with a set of spanners who would be willing to take on this task over the winter months? If so please speak with Angela Whittaker or Roy Watkinson. This year we have been able to pay for the churchyard to be mown and this has been funded substantially by a contribution of £500.00 from the Parish Council. We are grateful to the Council for this payment. Strimming and other work in the churchyard is still being undertaken by volunteers and if you would like to help this autumn or next summer then again please speak to Angela or Roy. Thank you. 14

Since our last meeting quite a few practical jobs have been done in and around the church including bolts on the kitchen door to enable us to leave the toilet available for use whilst church is open; repairs to the churchyard wall by the side gate; removal of paving stones against the west wall and laying of gravel (and digging of trenches) around the west end wall of church to improve drainage; a new shed roof; toilet signs in church; repainting of white lines on steps in and outside of church; cleaning of tower; inspection, strimming and tidying of churchyard, and much more …… Thank you to anyone who has helped in any kind of way.

Very soon the chairs in the Lady Chapel with be replaced by more comfortable chairs. This is at no extra cost to the church as during the floods we lost a good number of wooden chairs which we are able to replace with fewer but more comfortable chairs as part of our insurance claim. In the long term we will apply for faculty permission to remove the pews in the Lady Chapel and replace those with matching chairs to make the chapel a more flexible and comfortable space for worship.

On the 5th Sunday of the month our principal service at 10am moves around the churches of the Helm Group.
