GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY -PERSONNEL “NSF-REU: Undergraduate Research in Green-Engineered New Transportation Technologies (URGENTT)” Personnel Dr. Valentin Soloiu, PI, has 28 years’ experience in university teaching and research on theoretical and applied engineering in ICEs; specifically, R&D, sprays, combustion, and emissions. He teaches courses in Renewable Energy, ICE Design, Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Engine Testing, and HVAC to very diverse students. He has published over 60 papers; authored three textbooks and seven instruction manuals on ICE; and developed GSU’s AEP Laboratory, used by 12 undergraduate and 8 graduate students, about 50% minority. Dr. Soloiu has been advisor for 56 Master’s theses in the last 24 years; he is the academic advisor for about 20 undergraduate students every year; and over his career, he has worked with over 4,000 students, including minorities and people with special needs. Dr. David Williams, co-Pi has 35 years’ university teaching experience in industrial technology and engineering-related disciplines. His research focuses on time studies and efficiency planning using lean manufacturing; determining a fair day's work for hard, hot jobs (heat stress); applying the NIOSH lifting equation to ergonomically hazardous jobs in industry; and senior personnel. For 18 years, he directed the GSU Master of Technology program; he has directed more than 50 Master’s theses. His teaching experience has focused on Materials Science and Processing, Occupational Safety, Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene, Systems Safety, and Environmental Law. He has taught over 8,500 undergraduate and over 500 graduate students, many of them minorities. Co-PI: Dr. David A. Williams, Assoc. Professor Associate Dean Allen E. Dr. Rocio Alba-Flores has over 15 years’ experience in academia. Her research areas include control and embedded systems, sensors, image processing, and mobile robots. She has published over 30 papers in peer-reviewed conference proceedings and journals. She has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in Electrical Engineering; advised over 30 senior projects and 7 MS Theses; and mentored over 30 undergraduate students collaborating with her on research. Dr. Gustavo Molina coordinated GSU’s ASPIRES Summer Research Opportunities (NSF grant no. DUE-0622460), which supports about 15 undergraduate STEM majors and their faculty mentors each summer. He managed application procedures, the award committee, allocations and stipend payments, required student experience and research papers, exit surveys of both students and faculty mentors, and data compilation. He has published six peer-reviewed papers as well as conference proceedings with undergraduates co-authors and presented his research on engineering education at several American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) conferences.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY -PERSONNEL “NSF-REU: Undergraduate Research in Green-Engineered New Transportation Technologies (URGENTT)” Dr. Timothy D. Giles has taught technical communication to undergraduates for 27 years. He interned at Northern Telecom as a business journalist and was awarded a research fellowship with Medtronic to study the problem of readability according to grade levels as mandated by the Office of Health and Industry Programs, a part of the FDA. He serves as coordinator for the Department of Writing and Linguistics in Professional and Technical Writing at GSU. Dr. Anoop Desai has been in the engineering profession for over 12 years. He has six years of university teaching experience and has taught approximately 1,000 undergraduates. His research in industrial engineering focuses on product lifecycle management, engineering economy, green design, and design for manufacturing. He has published two books, three book chapters, and 25 peer-reviewed journal papers. Undergraduate and graduate student advisees routinely participate in scholarly research activities as co-authors and present conference papers and posters. Dr. Brian Koehler currently directs its science/math student internships. He has been in the GSU Chemistry department for 13 years and has taught over 2,000 students in both upper and lower division courses, mentored approximately 20 undergraduate researchers, and advised over 400 majors. Dr. Judith Longfield served on the Illinois State Board of Education’s Science Assessment Committee and developed test items for the Illinois Goals Assessment Program. She trained facilitators from 66 school districts to develop and implement state-mandated Learning Assessment Plans in math and science. She wrote Science Literacy grant applications for three Chicago-area county districts and the Illinois Science Supervisors Association.
