I. GENERAL INFORMATION Language Proficiency Examinations are available to North Shore Community College students who have acquired skills in foreign languages that are not offered for credit at the College. Examinations evaluate a student’s knowledge of a language and assign points equivalent to undergraduate credit at U.S. colleges. Academic credit is awarded to NSCC students who pass examinations at a performance level of C or better. II. ELIGIBILITY Any matriculated and enrolled NSCC student is eligible to request a Language Proficiency Examination. III. APPLICATION PROCEDURES A. The student contacts the Center for Alternative Studies and Educational Testing to request information and a registration form. B. The student arranges with Center for Alternative Studies and Educational Testing staff to have the examination session proctored, as required by the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies. The designated proctor provides a letter stating that s/he agrees to administer the exam. C. The student completes the NYU application, which must include: • • • •
The completed registration form for the requested Foreign Language Proficiency Exam The proctor’s letter The examination fee ($300) A separate MONEY ORDER for off-site shipping and handling ($20)

IV. TESTING A. Once the application and fees are received by the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at NYU, the test is mailed to the Center for Alternative Studies and Educational Testing.
B. The student makes an appointment for a specific testing time at the Center for Alternative Studies and Educational Testing and pays the TESTING FEE of $50 ($25 per testing hour) in the form of a MONEY ORDER. NOTE: Students who fail to attend their scheduled testing session without notifying the testing center 24 hours in advance will be considered a "no show" and must pay a $10.00 “no show” fee to reschedule (money order only). C. The student takes the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (time limit = 2 hours). D. Test answer sheets are forwarded by the Center for Alternative Studies and Educational Testing to NYU for scoring. V. DESCRIPTION OF THE EXAM THE 12-POINT EXAM The New York University Foreign Language Proficiency Exam tests three skills—listening, reading, and writing—that are necessary for everyday communicative tasks. Students are required to answer questions about a listening comprehension passage, to translate into English and into the test language, and to write a short essay in response to a selection of general topics. (The format of some language tests may be somewhat different, requiring short answers, multiple-choice selections, etc.). This examination evaluates a student’s knowledge of a language and assigns points equivalent to undergraduate credit. CREDIT IS GRANTED AT THE DISCRETION OF THE INSTITUTION RECEIVING THE RESULTS. (SEE CREDIT AWARDS DESCRIPTION AT NSCC IN NUMBER VI.) STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY URGED TO DISCUSS THEIR CREDIT AWARD WITH A CAS ADVISOR PRIOR TO TAKING THE EXAM.
Note: The results of these exams are valid for five years. VI. RESULTS Examinations are scored on a point scale, with each point equivalent to one credit. An official letter stipulating the results of the examination is mailed to the designated institution within seven weeks of testing. The student receives an unofficial copy of the letter. Should an official transcript be required, it can be obtained from the NYU Transcript Office by calling (212) 998-4280. VII. CREDIT AWARDS AND TRANSCRIPTION AT NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE The Center for Alternative Studies and Educational Testing receives a letter from New York University indicating the Foreign Language Proficiency Examination score for the student who has designated NSCC as the score recipient. If the student has achieved the NSCC passing score, the credit award is transcripted as transfer credit (this does not affect the student’s cumulative grade point average). The award of credit will appear on the student’s official transcript as follows: SEM/YR COURSE NUMBER COURSE TITLE 9/02 HUM151 Elementary Korean 1 9/02 HUM152 Elementary Korean 2
