Is There Lead in the Water? by Synove Hansen

Last summer the Colton School District`s water was tested for lead. All of the district buildings except the high school, had levels of lead above the safe limit set by the Oregon Public Health Department. The water was retested on September 6th, and the elementary school had high levels of lead as did the district office, while the middle school was within the safe limits. According to the Molalla Pioneer website, different water fixtures often have different levels of lead. This means that multiple water fixtures had to be tested to make sure the water was safe. In the middle school, the drinking fountains in the main hall way, and the water in the area where food is prepared, were tested for high levels of lead. The drinking fountains in the main hall way and the gym were tested in the elementary school. That was also stated by the Molalla Pioneer. While the water was being tested, no one could use the drinking fountains. As a result, water dispensers were put in place for students and teachers. In the buildings where the water fixtures had levels of lead above safe limits, water dispensers are still available. The district website stated three of the elementary school water fountains passed and three did not. The three that failed had 0.0262, 0.0223, and 0.0179 parts per billion of lead. This is above the Oregon Public Health Department limit of 0.015 or 15 parts per billion. The school district website said that the district office had 0.0272 parts per billion of lead. Molalla Pioneer website said all water fixtures in the Colton School District buildings that had lead levels above the limits will be replaced and retested. The water fixtures that are being changed are old and needed to be replaced in the near future. Luckily, this problem was caught and is now being addressed.

Are Cookies Going Endangered?!!?!?! by Gabriel OeDell & Jackson English

Did you know that due to global warming, grains and grasses may be endangered? Which means shortages in cookies, cake, bread, corn cereal or anything that uses a grain or grass (wheat, rice, etc.) product. Everyone is responsible for the potential downfall of this major food source because everyone is responsible for global warming. For those of you who don't know, global warming is the increase of greenhouse gases (specifically C02) that can lead to a temperature increase. Scientists believe that these grains and wheats may be significantly reduced by around the year 2070 as the plants can’t adapt fast enough to the changing temperature. In fact, The Guardian states, “The production of wheat will fall by 6% for every 1 degree Celsius.” Nature.com backs this up by stating that, “Wheat fields are more predictable and better at lower temperatures.” This would be terrible with the rising temperatures because grain makes up just under 50% of the daily food intake of the world. This would make the hunger problems in the world more severe. And worse of all, if this gets too severe, it could lead to mass shortages of wheat, corn and rice which are the main ingredients in many pastries such as doughnuts and in bakery goods such as cake. Those with a sweet tooth know that this is disastrous. One way to prevent this is switching from gas power to electric power in cars, appliances, or heating. Let’s save the cookies!

7th Grade Viking of the Month

6th Grade Viking of the Month

by Caitlin Ingersoll

by Dallas Mullins

October’s seventh grade Viking of the Month for 2016 is Dylan Bonfield. His favorite part of seventh grade so far is the options for electives, such as technology. Actually, Dylan's favorite class this year is technology. If he could change anything about CMS, it would be the food. He would make it so that we could have ice cream, preferably fudge popsicles. Dylan has been coming to Colton schools since the first grade. If he could meet anyone in the world, it would be Bill Bonfield. Bill is Dylan's father's real dad. He wants to meet him because he only met him when he was three and doesn’t remember much of the experience.

To his surprise, Mikah Fulmer was nominated for Viking of the Month for October. The teacher that nominated him, Mrs. Holst, chose him for his respect towards other students and his sense of responsibility.

Dylan was picked to be Viking of the Month by Mrs. Fitz. He was picked for his willingness to help, positive participation, and great questions. He is in two of Mrs. Fitz’s classes, which are advanced math and informal math. He plays soccer, wrestles, and plans on doing track.

This boy is kind and has a favorite teacher named Mr. Salsman. Mr.Salsman is Mikah’s favorite teacher because, “he’s Mr. Salsman.” His favorite classes are with Mrs. Holst because those classes are, “simple and she is nice.” Mikah enjoys the simple things in life outside school, such as eating vanilla ice cream on a warm day, and playing with his 7 year old Pitbull, Dyne. He also enjoys playing video games like Destiny or watching TV at his home.

8th Grade Viking of the Month by Reagan Kilman & Elijah Cox

Synove Hansen is the 8th grade Viking of the Month. Her favorite thing about school is that she gets to learn new things. She likes to show rabbits at the Clackamas County Fair. So far, she has not won any awards while showing. Currently, Synove is showing Netherland dwarf rabbits. She has been showing rabbits since she was in 3rd grade. Her rabbit's name is Pepper, which she has had for two years. Her main hobby is reading, especially fantasy and science fiction. Synove is looking forward to track season where she will be competing in 200-meter dash, 400-meter run, long jump, and high jump. Her favorite food is broccoli, so she is a very healthy eater. Synove thinks that junk food is too sweet for her to eat. One cool fact about her is that she does taekwondo. Her favorite thing to do is to ride horses because she says it’s fun! Synove’s favorite animal is the horse because her mom has always had horses, so she grew up around them and so she grew to like them. Synove’s favorite breed of horses is the quarter horse. Synove has one older sister named Honor. The reason why Ms. Denny chose Synove is because she is a great student and is consistently a student who flies under the radar.

Vikings Hit the Gridiron

by Caleb Behrens & Javin GoDair by Adam Balzer & Mikah Fulmer

Every year, during the fall, 7th and 8th grade Colton Middle School girls play volleyball. CMS volleyball includes two teams - an A team and a B team. The A team mainly consists of 8th graders, but a few of the 7th graders are swingers, meaning they can sometimes play on both the A and B team. While on the other hand, the B team has only 7th graders. Volleyball swinger, Rowyn Lawrynuik, said that the B team needs a little improvement. She thinks that they need to work on communication while on the court, serving, working together, and going for the ball. Rowyn said that her goal is to work her hardest to become better so that she can play on the A team. Three 8th grade volleyball players, Jackie Parker, Hailey Gillaspie, and Madelyn Robinson, all said that the A team is doing pretty well. They have won all matches but four. They all agreed that their team could improve on communication on the court, spiking, and getting the ball over the net without going over three hits. All of them have some goals that they want to work on. Jackie Parker said that she wants to score a total of 35 points throughout the season. Madelyn said that she wants to improve on spikes and passes to the center, and Hailey Gillaspie said that she wants to improve her serves. Mrs. Weinberger and Mrs. Gunter both coach this year’s volleyball team. Mrs. Weinberger likes to coach because she enjoys the atmosphere of sports, hanging out with the girls, and helping the team achieve their goals. She particularly likes this year’s teams because she thinks that they have worked the best together out of any of the teams she’s ever coached. She also added that the girls are often best for each other. The second coach, Mrs. Gunter, said that she likes to coach because she likes to see how the girls’ skills improve over the course of the season. GO LADY VIKS!!! A Team - Lexi Gunter, Jackie Parker, Hannah Stevens, Caitlin Ingersoll, Rylie Lawrynuik, Hailey Gillaspie, Madelyn Robinson, Madelynne Pierce, Ryann Gates, Evelyn Ruest, Natalie Penni, Jada Rockhill B Team - Hailee Hordichok, Paige Pierce, Brianna Walker, Rowyn Lawrynuik, Cierra Ridenour, Taylor Bauer, Emma Dilg, Cassidi Cahoon, Tina Reed, Greta Nolte, and Kimber Dusenberry

There almost always has been a football team in Colton. There probably will always be one. Football practice started weeks before school even started, so the team could get into shape. Football games started the second week of school. Their head coach is Mr. Cervantes and the assistant coach is Mr. Escher. According to the coaches, the team’s best game to date was against Blanchet where they took down the Cavaliers by a score of 36-14. At the time of writing, the team had two losses, and two wins. Travers Rogers, a seventh grade football player said that his favorite moments in football have been when he tackled a kid really hard and threw him two or three yards and in a different game he almost got an interception. Travers likes to play football because he enjoys tackling people without getting in trouble. The team is made up of eighth graders and a seventh graders and everyone on the team has their own reason why they play. When asked how the team was going so far, many football players just said “good” or “pretty good.” Seventh grade football players: Austin Allen, Nathan Carroll, Dominic Combest, Zane Dinnell, Jackson English, Terrence Jensen, Tanner Johnson, Keeden Raasch, Bryce Riggs, and Travers Rogers. Eighth grade football players: Braenden Allen, Hunter Collins, Kamron Curtis, Isaiah Frias, Elijah Hagler, Carl Lundgren, Gabe Montanez, Joseph Moore, Dallas Mullins, Robby Skinner, Dillon Terleski, and Cody Tiano. Managers: Caleb Jennings and Destinee Burley *Photo of team is located on page 8.

The New Apple iPhone 7 is here!

by Nick Blake & Travers Rogers by Wesley Richelderfer & Keneke Carson

Are you going to buy the new iPhone 7? Before you decide, you should know that Apple has made some significant changes to the iPhone 7 from the iPhone 6.

Imagine you’re in say… Africa! Say one of the indigenous peoples asks you a question that you don’t have an answer to. You have your phone, but again, you’re in Africa, so what do you do? Enter Aquila! The Boeing 737 sized solar powered internet plane! Confused? Excited? More below! Thirty-two-year-old Mark Zuckerberg and the crew at Facebook flew this bad boy on June 28 for the first time in Yuma, Arizona. It was supposed to fly for thirty minutes, but tests went so well, that it stayed up for ninety-six minutes says USAToday. Takeoffs and landings are automatically done, but the ground crew controls altitude, airspeed, and directions. Aquila will pioneer technology and engineering sciences, and hopefully break the record for longest unmanned drone flight, which is currently held at 82 hours and 37 minutes according to News Atlas. Tech News World says Facebook will hopefully have a fleet of 10,000 planes at $15,000 apiece. That’s $150,000,000! But don’t get too attached to the numbers though, it’s still too early to have any definite information about the price. The Verge states that Aquila is 141 feet long but it only uses an estimated 2,000-3,600 watts of electricity. Are you wondering how much it weighs? One ton? Two tons? Nope. It only weighs 900 pounds says The Verge, about half the weight of a smart car. This astonishing feat of engineering flies somewhere between 60,000-90,000 feet in the air USA Today tells, or 11.36-17.04 miles up, and unlike most commercial jets and drones, speed is not key. So, they tried to make it fly as slow as possible, while still being in the air without falling. It only flies at 80 MPH compared to a 747’s 614 miles per hour. So, maybe sometime in the future, you’ll be seeing a fleet of these flying around during your next adventure in a remote place. But, maybe it’ll just be tossed onto the heap of epic stuff that never fully “took off.”

If you’re looking for reasons to buy the new iPhone 7, here is some information to help you from appleinsider.com. The iPhone 7 includes a new A10 processor with four cores, two performance and two efficiency cores. This means it’s faster and improves battery power. The camera also was improved with its optics and support, therefore making it so it can take pictures in low light and pictures of moving objects. The screen’s brightness was increased in this new model. Another good thing about the iPhone 7 is that it’s water resistant, but with that feature brings a problem with this new device. There are many problems with the new Apple product that could possibly stray you away from the device. One of the most common problems is that the iPhone 7 doesn't have the 3.5 mm headphone jack that has been in many iPhone models in the past, so that means that you would probably have to buy the $159 wireless headphones which would make you lose your headphones more often and also they are very expensive and that could strain your wallet. Or you can use the headphones that come with the phone which as nice as they are, these headphones sacrifice the way to charge your device. Also, the new jet black finish scratches and gets scuffs really easily according to appleinsider.com. Currently, that is all the information we have on the iPhone 7. So far, it's a love it or hate it device.

Rylie Lawrynuik’s iPhone 7 Adventure by Paige Pierce & Q

Rylie checking out her new iPhone 7.

Though the new iPhone 7 sold out really fast, CMS student, Rylie Lawrynuik, was able to get one. According to the Forbes website, some of the changes that Apple made include: no headphone jack, better camera quality, and more updates. Rylie recently got the iPhone 7 because her last one was shattered. The other iPhones she has had in the past were the iPhone 6, iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S. “The touch screen quality (of the iPhone 7) is the same as the 6,” she said. Not having a headphone jack does not bother her because she can get special headphones and plug them into the charging port. She has the black phone, but if she could change the color of her phone, she would choose rose gold. Although few students have been able to get the phone, the word is out the iPhone 7 is a big hit!

Which Genre of Music is the Most Popular at Our School? by Madelyn Hoyt & Kaia Schrosk

You might have your mind set on what type of music you like. These are the results of a schoolwide survey. Country music turned out to be the most popular. Almost one out of every three (32.81%) students like listening to country music. With 42 votes, it was the clear leader in this survey. The second most favorite music genre in the school was pop. There was a pretty big drop between the percentage of the country and pop. Pop brought in 23.44% of the school with 30 votes. In third place, hip-hop was voted for by 17.19% of the school and had 22 votes. Electronic /dubstep came in fourth place, at 14.06% with 18 votes. In fifth place, was hard rock at 5.47% with 7 votes. With 3.91% and 5 votes, dance came in sixth place. Despite having the longest musical history, only 2.34% of the school listens to classical music with 3 people voting for it. Blues / jazz had 0.78% of the school and a single vote. Last but not least, well, it is the least; R & B came in with 0.00%. You might not agree with the standings, but your peers obviously do! Thanks for participating in this survey! Good night, America!

A Long Time Ago, in a Galaxy Far Away, Rogue One Came to Theatre by Samuel Shumate

Rogue One is the next Star Wars movie coming to theatre. This movie is going to be a Star Wars story, not a chapter in the saga. As you know, these fan loved the movies that were once directed by George Lucas, now Disney has taken over. J.J Abrams directed The Force Awakens in December 18, 2015. The new director is Gareth Edwards. Since Rouge One isn't coming out until December 16, 2016, they are not sure what the ratings are. Cinema Blend is a movie critic, and they are estimating it will be PG-13 or PG, but they don't know for sure. Cinema Blend is determined that in May 25, 2018, they want to do a Han Solo film that is like other Star Wars stories. Also, Cinema Blend is saying that in 2019, they want to do a Star Wars 8, which currently does not have a title.

Joke Time! Q: Have you heard the one about the cookie? A: You wouldn’t like it, it’s really crumby!

Right now, Rogue One only has one trailer out. This Star Wars movie is set during the same time as A New Hope. Much is still unknown about Rogue One, but it has been confirmed that there are plans for the Death Star. Many Star Wars fans will be excited to see this movie because it has the old storm troopers, and in the trailer you can see Darth Vader. When this movie comes out, you will have to blast off to see it! Elijah Cox and Amy Wills go after the ball during P.E.

Welcoming the New! by Natalie Penni & Shaelynne Martinez

Mr. Hayball is one of the newest staff members at the school. He teaches Study Skills and Read 180 which are support classes that students find really helpful. To teach those classes, he had to receive a master's degree in special education. Mr. Hayball teaches all three grades. Before coming to Colton, he was a teacher at Gresham High School. He was drawn to Colton because he loves the “small district” where he can have a large impact as a teacher at the middle school and as the athletic director at the high school. He loves the way the community is involved with the school. This environment of a school-centered community reminds him of his childhood and the way he grew up. Something that is different about his classes from others, is the fact that he doesn't teach a certain subject. Instead, he communicates with teachers to see how he can help those students in their other classes. One thing we kids may not know about Mr. Hayball is that he competed as a semi-professional triathlete on the east coast. A triathlon includes swimming, biking, and running. If you get a chance, stop by and see Mr. Hayball and welcome him as one of the newest additions to the Colton community.

New Math Books by Olivia Haines & Brianna Walker

Brianna Walker and Olivian Haines show off the new math textbooks that students are using this year.

This year, the middle school got brand new math books for all grades. Mrs. Fitzgerald had a lot to say about the new books. She said the reason we got new books is because we were behind on our curriculum. Also, they meet the students’ learning styles and needs. She says she enjoys the new math books so much because the activities in the old books were not as engaging. She thinks that the students like them better because it encourages group work and conversations about math. The students at CMS seem to like the new books. Sixth grader, Anna Parker says that the math is the same from her old school and she kind of likes the new books. Seventh grader, Ashton Hooper, says the math is not that much harder than when he was in sixth grade. Eighth grader, Natalie Penni, says that the math is definitely harder than when she was in seventh grade. Also, Natalie thinks that these books are a lot nicer.

Electives: Worth the Hype? by Ruby Becker & Jackie Parker

Electives. Good or bad? Answers may differ depending on who you ask. We interviewed one person in the band and two people who play a sport to see how it affected them. Lexi Gunter is an eighth grader on the volleyball A-team and she has her own opinion. She says that the electives have made school more enjoyable. They are a “relief” period she says, meaning a period which allows a break from more strenuous core classes. However, not everyone got the electives they wanted. Lexi’s first preference was art but ended up not getting it. This has been a common situation for many students. Emma Jo Dilg is a seventh grader who participates in both band and volleyball. She says that even though she got the electives she wanted, many of her friends got placed into an elective that they didn’t like. Yet there is another situation that involves Gabe OeDell, an eighth grader who is in band. Though he enjoys his electives, journalism and band, he actually wanted technology. Even though some students didn't get the elective they wanted, Lexi, Gabe, and Emma all agreed that the electives are very helpful. Lexi says that the electives are great because “they target a certain area of learning and let the students do the rest.” We also asked them if they liked the exploratories from last year as much as they like the electives this year. For sixth graders who don’t know, exploratories were the classes we had in the periods we have electives now. Exploratories were based on learning about other subjects that were not common core subjects. For example, in one exploratory we learned CPR and in another we raised salmon. Gabe says he likes the electives and exploratories about the same amount. Lexi’s opinion is that this year the students got more say in their classes because students were placed in exploratory classes in the past and didn’t have much input as to which exploratory they were assigned. This year however, the students were able to choose what elective they wanted, for the most part. Also, the electives have made it so the volleyball players, football players, and other sports players aren’t missing out on core classes anymore, which have satisfied many students this year. However, band members who participate in an athletic activity miss out on class every other day now, which they know first-hand puts a dent in their rehearsal time during school. So, here's the question. Are electives worth the hype?

Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump? by Savanna Jackson & Hailey Gillaspie

The presidential debate is a very big decision to make because we are deciding who is going to run our country next. The people we have to choose from are mainly Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. This campaign has divided our nation in half. There are so many protests and a lot of violence thanks to this campaign but it’s almost over so America just has to last until Tuesday, November 8th. The debates got pretty competitive between Hillary and Trump as they both have different plans for our nation. Trump's plans are to make a tax plan that would give huge tax relief. This would lower the tax bracket from its current level of 39.6% to 25%, which is extremely helpful to families that have a lot of taxes. Trump’s main economic plan seems to involve trade. He says trade deals are becoming weak and have cost the United States thousands of jobs. During the televised debates, Donald Trump stated again his plans of constructing a wall along the border of Mexico and to deport 11 million undocumented people in our country. Hillary Clinton, however, has different things on her mind such as gun violence. Clinton believes that the weapons of war have no place on the streets of our country. Hillary stated that guns are very dangerous and we shouldn’t be able to just go and buy one without proper background check procedures in place. Clinton also believes that people who are on the “no fly” list should not be allowed to own a gun. Another thing Hillary would like to improve is leave pay for mothers, especially for families of adopted children. According to her website, Clinton guarantees up to 12 weeks of paid medical or family leave and to ensure parents get paid more than 2/3 of their current wages. To get some input we went to Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Davis and they both agreed that they wouldn’t vote for either of them because they don't have faith in either to lead our country. Sixth grader Natalia Chianello said that she would rather vote for Snoopy, while 7th grader Keeden Raasch says he would vote for Trump “because he is better than Hillary.” Eighth grader, Savanna Panus, says that she would vote for Trump because she likes his stickers and his hair.

Who will be our next President?

The Trip to Mars by Madelyn Robinson & Cassidi Cohoon

What is Mars like? Is it habitable? Scientists seem to think that it is and we can start living on the “Red Planet” soon. In 2024, Mars One Mission is sending a spacecraft into space in preparation for a trip to Mars. According to The Guardian, “Mars spacecrafts are selecting volunteers to establish a colony on the planet. From more than 200,000 people who hoped to leave Earth and die on Mars, only 660 remain in the running. Those who make the final cut will earn a seat on the Mars One mission, a one-way trip to the Red Planet.” How exciting is this! Would you want to go to Mars? Plus, they are planning to launch up another spacecraft in 2026 to accompany the spacecraft from 2024. If you move to Mars, it may be impossible to ever return to Earth, unless somebody creates a whole new spaceship to make the trip. That would take a while to build. Furthermore, how would you get the materials up to Mars anyway? You would almost have to launch up another spacecraft to take the materials up there, and that would be extremely expensive. Cnet states that, “The real cost of a trip to Mars could be brain damage. Scientists say the voyage to Mars could turn you into a basket case. And that is before arriving on a planet with dozens of ways to kill you.” So yes, you have a risk of dying when you go to Mars, but this has not stop the 660 people that are hoping to live and die on the Red Planet in the sky.

Flu Season is Near, Get Your Shot Now! by Nolan Earls

Election Day is Tuesday, November 8th

Many people wonder when to get a flu shot, and now is that time. People should try to get a flu shot every season, but if that isn't possible then try to get it every other year. For those who don’t like needles, you can get a nasal spray. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work as well because it will not last as long as a regular flu shot, which lasts three months at the least. If you are younger than 15-year-old or over 65, you should really get a flu shot because the flu affects those age groups more than others. The three flu types are A, B, and C. Types A and B are the Influenza. The symptoms are sniffling, aching, and running high fevers. Type C include respiratory infections and a dry cough according to Wikipedia. You can avoid these symptoms by getting your flu shot now because flu season is coming! So, go get your shot before it’s too late.
