The STRIVE HI scores published in the Maui News and other Hawaii newspapers this week provided some insight into the academic strengths and challenges our students have at Pukalani Elementary School (PES). We have already taken action at the school level to address the challenges students are showing in meeting the SBAC benchmarks in reading and math. While the information we get from the SBAC scores is valuable, it is just one piece of data that we look at to meet the diverse needs of all our students. Students are making progress in all areas of achievement as shown by other data sources. Students’ individual achievement needs are targeted through our core instruction in reading and math, through our response to intervention program, and through our Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math (STREAM) instruction. When looking at the individual SBAC scores for students, 68% of our 4th and 5th grade students’ Language Arts scores increased. Students’ science scores have been steadily increasing each year , and 60% of our 4th grade students scored in the proficient range. Most importantly we have seen a huge increase in the amount of students wanting to participate in our after-school programs. Our mission for all students is to be provided the instructional opportunities to support their growth in becoming caring, capable and contributing 21st century leaders. This is reflected by the amount of opportunities students have to participate, not just in their core instruction, but in art, physical education, and garden throughout the week. Students of all cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in grades K-5 are excited to have the opportunity to participate in the after school enrichment programs PES offers. Over the past few years PES students have shown their leadership in art and science as reflected in the amount of students who have participated and placed in the County Art Fair and the recognition our Robotics teams have received at both the State and National Levels. PES Stallions are amazing! Each child presents special qualities that makes our school unique. We will continue to work on planning rigorous instruction to ensure that a higher percentage of students will be able to reach the SBAC benchmarks. As important, however, are our continued efforts to provide instruction that meets the individual needs of each child and celebrate the success they make in all of their academic, social and emotional development.
