Juniors to Take Government Mandated State Assessment
MCC Hosts College Application Event Magic City Campus seniors will have the opportunity to participate in the American College Application Campaign (ACAC) event on Oct. 25. Sponsored by the Renaissance Team, the American Council of Education (ACE), and a statewide steering committee, it offers every senior the opportunity to apply for college, university, or trade school with the assistance of over 30 volunteers. Volunteers will include teaching staff, college representatives from many North Dakota colleges and trade schools, as well as community partners. This year we hope to surpass the 2015 submission rate of nearly 400 completed college applications! In addition to the college application process, seniors will also be provided help to begin applying for their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) account. The Bank of North Dakota will pay the application cost for all students completing an application during this event. Parents are encouraged to discuss post-secondary plans with their seniors prior to the Oct. 25 ACAC event. A College Application Worksheet was provided to each senior and can also be found on the Magic City Campus website. It is an excellent discussion starter to help seniors and parents narrow their college search. As always, the MCC counselors are available, by appointment, to discuss postsecondary plans with students.
As part of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) federal legislation, all juniors are required to take a state assessment in the area of Science on October 23 and 24, during their regular school classes. Minot High School juniors will take the North Dakota Assessment in Math and Language Arts in May. The results of these tests are extremely important because: • Colleges and universities may use the results as a factor in determining admission;
Parent-Teacher Conferences MCC Gymnasium Monday, November 6 • Tuesday, November 7 4:00-7:00 p.m.
• Colleges and universities may use the results as a factor in determining placement in specific programs and curriculums; and
Parent-teacher conferences offer parents the opportunity to discuss student progress with individual teachers. The teachers will be available in the gymnasium for easy access with their individual tables distributed to allow for private conversation. We encourage all parents to attend; your student is welcome, as well!

C2G • Commitment to Graduate The THREE A’S for Academic Success:
Attendance: • Attendance is the #1 factor in determining student success in school. • Certain learning activities cannot be replicated so absences may equate to lost learning opportunities. • Students need to be in class on time, with materials, and engaged every day.
Attitude: • Displaying a positive attitude helps a student do their best work every day. • Students with a positive attitude tend to be more confident. • A positive attitude is contagious! Model it for your student.
Academic: • Look at the whole high school experience, but focus on academics. • Attempt all work and expect completion. • Teach your student to ask for help. • Expect your student to meet deadlines. (Summarized from Jostens’ “Welcome to the New School Year at Your New School” brochure.)
Academic Support Opportunities at MCC Multiple opportunities are available at MCC for student assistance. • The most accessible form is the Tuesday through Friday Office Hours. Teachers are available in their classrooms from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. and 3:05-3:30 p.m. for a quick question or a more lengthy tutoring opportunity. • Guided Study offers an assigned class which may be taken on an off-hour or on the days opposite PE. Two teachers assist students with time management, organization, study skills, and structured homework/study time. • A newer assist is the Magic Peer Tutoring Program. Tutors are ready to provide extra assistance to students in the areas of Math, Science, English, Social Studies, and Foreign Languages. The tutors are juniors and seniors that have received training in the process of tutoring. Services are confidential and based on the needs of the student. Last year, over 40 students received assistance from this program. Interested students should see Mr. Davis in the Guidance Office. For more information on the program, contact the Guidance Office at 857-4512.
