A.J. Brendel Mission Statement At Brendel Elementary our mission is to provide the highest quality education in a safe, caring and challenging community that allows for individual differences and learning styles.

GETTING HOME SAFELY If you are changing your child’s dismissal plans call the main office (591-6137) before 3:00 pm. DO NOT leave a voice message. Make sure you speak with a secretary. They will get the change to the teacher and student. If your student uses a planner teachers would like you to write the change in their planner but a call to the office is also needed.

If you have a medical appointment (Dr., Dental, Ortho etc.) please get a doctor note so your student‘s attendance will show a medical excused absence.

Principal’s Corner: Brendel teachers are very excited to announce that starting next week, our 3rd-5th grade students are going to become “Serious Readers!” We know that students need to read a lot to become proficient readers, and one way to really motivate reading is to choose a series and read it all the way through. I grew up on “Nancy Drew,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “The Lord of the Rings.” Many successful readers started as children devouring series and author’s works that they got hooked on. We recently came across a video about a school in Nevada that took on a school-wide initiative to encourage their students to read a series, and was also connected to their Accelerated Readers Program (which we also have). That school suddenly had an amazing growth in their students’ achievement as readers. That achievement effected other areas as well. They attribute their success to kids sharing their passion about stories with others, and teachers getting involved by sharing their favorite books. So next week, after your child’s library day, ask them what series they are going to read. Some already have a head start; check out the 4th grader in the picture above; we had to order more books for the series he is reading! Share with your child which series you enjoyed as a child, and maybe what you enjoy reading now. Let’s all share the joy of being “Serious Readers!” Check out this video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wwcYsgw374
