Training the Trainer: Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning
Please join us to honor all those who have gone to their eternal reward at our Mass or Remembrance being held at St. Athanasius Parish Saturday, November 11 at our 4:00 Mass
Location: Archdiocese of Boston, Pastoral Center 66 Brooks Drive, Braintree, MA 02184 Date: Wednesday, 25 October 2017 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM The Archdiocese of Boston has an initiative to promote and educate our faith community about palliative care for people of any age who are diagnosed with serious illness. (Palliative care is not just about care of the dying!) We are building informational resources for every parish or collaborative community. Also, the resource group would schedule annual presentations with the Archdiocesan office for their parishes.
With open hearts we will cherish their memory and pray for their eternal peace. Please feel free to extend an invite to other family members. A coffee reception will follow after in the Parish center.

From the Music Director Dear Congregation, The Church has official music that it recommends for three points in the Mass: at the entrance of the priest, the offertory, and the reception of Communion. These three officially appointed musical texts are called the “Mass Propers” and are traditionally chanted at designated times during the Mass. The text of the Propers is almost always taken from Scripture and, therefore, are the Word of God. While the Church does allow us to replace them by suitable hymns, I have often found it difficult to find a hymn that says exactly what the Church wishes us to hear on any given Sunday. For example, this week’s Communion Proper is taken from the Gospel of St. Mark: “The Son of Man has come to give his life as a ransom for many.” You may have noticed that I already sing the Communion Proper at all Masses before the Communion hymn, though I do not do the Offertory Proper because it is not found in the hymnal. A solution for the entrance processional is to sing the Entrance Proper after the opening hymn that we are all meant to sing together. We have been doing this at the 9:00am Mass for some time. It has worked well and enriches the parish’s liturgical life, so you will begin hearing it at the 4:00 and 11:00 as well. Hopefully, this will not only be pleasing to the ear but will help us to better appreciate how the Word informs the Mass. Thank You, John Donovan Music Director
Eagle Project to Benefit Church Sam Barrette, an Eagle Scout candidate and parishioner, has been given approval by the Town of Reading to build a much needed pathway and conservation-approved bridge between St. Athanasius Parish and Sawtelle Hospice House. Due to limited space, many of the residents’ family members, nurses, and volunteers park in our lot, but then walk along Haverhill St. to get to Sawtelle, which can be particularly burdensome and sometimes unsafe in inclement weather. Our priests who frequently minister to the sick do the same, so this project supports the many works of mercy undertaken for those nearing the end of life. Sam will be speaking about his project at the conclusion of Mass next week and will be available to provide additional information afterward. Donations to help cover the expenses to create the pathway and build the bridge are needed and very welcome. Both cash or checks made out to Troop 750 with “Sam’s Eagle Project” in the memo section are acceptable. Thank you for your support of this worthwhile project. 4
