F ROM THE PASTOR
Praying to the Saints…. and for the Faithful Departed in Purgatory (Excerpted from the Catholic Answers articles “The Intercession of the Saints” and “The Roots of Purgatory,”
which can be found at www.Catholic.com) The Bible directs us to invoke those in heaven and ask them to pray with us. Thus in Psalm 103 we pray: "Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word! Bless the Lord, all his hosts, his ministers that do his will!” Not only do those in heaven pray with us, they also pray for us. In the Book of Revelation, we read: "[An] angel came and stood at the altar [in heaven] with a golden censer; and he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne; and the smoke of the incense rose with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel before God" (Rev. 8:3). Those in heaven who offer to God our prayers aren’t just angels, but humans as well. St. John sees that "the twenty-four elders [the leaders of the people of God in heaven] fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints" (Rev. 5:8). The simple fact is, as this passage shows: The saints in heaven offer to God the prayers of the saints on earth. However, since sin and final glorification are utterly incompatible, between the sinfulness of this life and the glories of heaven, we must be made pure. The concept of an after-death purification from sin is stated in the New Testament (see 1 Cor 3:11–15 and Matt 5:25–26). Thus, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name purgatory to this final purification of the elect" (CCC 1030). Some imagine that the Catholic Church has an elaborate doctrine of purgatory worked out, but there are only three essential components of the doctrine: (1) that a purification after death exists, (2) that it involves some kind of pain, and (3) that the purification can be assisted by the prayers and offerings by the living to God. Additional ideas, such that purgatory is a particular "place" in the afterlife or that it takes time to accomplish, are speculations rather than doctrines. The early Church not only clearly recognized the biblical teaching that those in heaven can and do intercede for us, but that we, also, pray for those who are not yet in eternal glory. To offer a tiny but very instructive example, we close with a few quotes from St Augustine: "There is an ecclesiastical discipline, as the faithful know, that when the names of the martyrs are read aloud in that place at the altar of God, the prayer is not offered for [the saints]. Prayer, however, is offered for other dead who are remembered. It is wrong to pray for a martyr, to whose prayers we ought ourselves be commended." "At the Lord’s table we do not commemorate martyrs in the same way that we do others who rest in peace so as to pray for them, but rather that they may pray for us that we may follow in their footsteps." "The whole Church observes this practice which was handed down by the Fathers: that it prays for those who have died in the communion of the Body and Blood of Christ, and the sacrifice [Mass] is offered also in memory of them, on their behalf. It is not at all to be doubted that such prayers are of profit to the dead.”

Prayer Ministry
Jesus doesn’t mince words in today’s gospel. “The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments” - love God with your whole being and love your neighbor as yourself. There is no wiggle room in how we are to behave and how we are to treat one another. As his disciples, let us pray for the grace to be faithful to living according to these commandments in all areas of our life.
Hosted by Katie Curtis
