October 6 Ed Highlights A school has to have spirit! Already the High School and Middle Years Student Councils organized a spirit day. On Wednesday the high school students had pattern day and everyone was dressed in funky clothes with you name it …. stripes, polka dots and zigzags. In the middle years the grade 5 class wore green, the grade 6 class wore blue, the grade 7 class wore black and the grade 8 class wore red. What great spirit! Wednesday was the day for the High School zone cross-country run. 22 of our students boarded the bus to head to Spruce Woods Park. It was nice to see more participation in the running event this year. Congratulations go out to Hannah Desrochers who placed 1st in the junior girl’s event, Chelsea Dearsley who placed 4th in the senior girl’s event, and to Logan Cline who placed 4th in the senior boy’s event. In the team events the senior boys placed 2nd and the junior boys placed 4th. They will all be off to provincials on Wednesday the 14 . th

The Fall Supper which was put on by the Parent Advisory Council on Sunday, October 4th was yet another success. I believe that there were close to 450 people in attendance. Our supportive community gave us many compliments about the meal and about how efficient and polite the students were. This event takes a lot of organizing and commitment. Thank you Fall Supper committee for all your hard work and thank you to all the parents who contribute in any way. The money raised goes to the PAC and they give back to each and every one of our kids in the school. Thank you everyone! Just a reminder all students should have received their picture proofs. Orders are due this Friday.

October 13 Ed Highlights A Parent Voice meeting was held on Monday, October 5th at the division office. Two parents and the principal from each school in the division were in attendance to talk about early years literacy development, entrepreneurship, transitioning from high school to postsecondary, and John Hattie’s research on student learning. All trustees and division staff were there to guide the discussions and hear everyone’s opinions and concerns. Bus evacuation went smoothly last week. Each bus driver went over the situations for using the emergency exits and how to perform a proper bus evacuation drill if there were to be in an emergency. On Tuesday, October 6th, Baldur School hosted the Grade 5 & 6 Divisional Soccer tournament. Ten teams in total participated. Baldur had a very strong showing. Both teams were undefeated in all six games. What a great display of soccer skills in these grades. We also hosted a number of teams for the Grade 7 & 8 Divisional Soccer tournament the following day. Both Baldur teams played well and had fun. During the two days, many staff and students from the high school worked the canteen and refereed. Thank you to those who helped in any way and thank you to Mr. McLean for organizing the events. The Varsity girls volleyball team had a very busy week. On Monday in our home gymnasium, they beat Prairie Mountain in 3 out of 5 sets. Again at home on Thursday they won against Manitou in 4 out of 5 sets. In the Boissevain tournament over the weekend, the girls lost in the final in 3 sets to Boissevain. Great playing girls! The Wildcats are having their home tournament this weekend. Good luck boys! We should know who made the team after this weekend. A Grad meeting was held on Thursday evening with the grads and their parents in attendance. It’s hard to believe that already the beginning stages of planning have begun. Just a reminder to parents that there are still Fall Supper dishes at the school waiting to be picked up.

October 20 Ed Highlights After eating one or two Thanksgiving turkey dinners over the weekend, the grade 5 - 8 classes participated in the Divisional Crosscountry Run in Glenboro at Spruce Woods Provincial Park. We had a fantastic showing. Here are the individual results: Kayden Gudnason 2nd, Peighton Johnson - 2nd. Team results: Grade 5 Girls - 3rd, Grade 6 Girls - 2nd, Grade 6 Boys - 3rd, Grade 7 Boys - 3rd, Grade 7 Girls - 3rd, and Grade 8 Girls - 1st. Way to go runners! I’ve come to the conclusion that we should have turkey dinner more often. Similarly, the Provincial High School Cross-country run was on Wednesday at Spruce Woods Provincial Park. We had 17 runners participating. Congratulations go out to everyone who participated and to Hannah Desrochers on finishing 15th out of approximately 173 runners in the province. Very impressive! The Parent Advisory AGM meeting was on Wednesday night. The Council filled all positions. Thank you to everyone that volunteers in these positions. It’s nice to see how involved our parents want to be with the school and their child’s education. To end the week, on Friday we had the Central Manitoba Youth Choir perform in the gymnasium. Wow what beautiful sound this choir has! One of our own students, Natasha Geeregat, performed with the choir and had a solo part as well. Natasha loves music and I know Natasha has been working hard and looking forward to this tour for quite some time. Great job Natasha! Many members of the community came out to the performance, including Shamrock School. Thank you to all those that attended and supported the choir. The varsity girls’ volleyball team played in a tournament in Hamiota over the weekend. They lost in the semi-final against Deloraine. As of before this tournament, our team was ranked first in the province ahead of Deloraine.

Ed Highlights October 27

On Monday, October 19th, the Grade 11 and 12 classes boarded the bus to Glenboro for a Manitoba Post-Secondary Career forum organized by Mr. Kirk. The students had the opportunity to listen to representatives from a variety of post-secondary institutions to learn about career programs they were interested in. For those looking to continue their education and training after high school, it is very important that they look into applying early for entrance into the various institutions. Many of the programs, especially at the colleges, fill up very quickly or there are waiting lists that can delay registration. It was a very informative day for all students. On Wednesday, the grade 11 class had a Safe Workers of Tomorrow presentation. The Safety Practicum started with a morning session conducted by the “Workers of Tomorrow” organization. Students were introduced to WHS legislation, employee rights and responsibilities, working alone policies, and other relevant topics. In the afternoon, students toured community worksites where local safety protocol was explained to them. We would like to thank the local businesses for opening their doors to this program and for donating their time and expertise to the students. Without their support this could not take place. As well in the afternoon the grade 9’s had a mini-session on workplace safety. This session prepared the students for their “Take Your Kids to Work” Day on November 4th. Our grade 7/8 boys team and coach, Mr. Eng travelled to Crystal City and won all of their games. The grade 7/8 girls team and coach Miss Swart travelled to Glenboro and won one game and lost one game. The Varsity Girls team is on a hot streak. They played last Monday against Pilot Mound and won 3 sets, then on Thursday they played Treherne and won 3 out of 4 sets. Congratulations go out to Chase Desrochers, Owen Lockhart, Kody Everett (AP), and Jaden Johnson (AP) for making the Wildcat Hockey Team. I am sure you will have a great season. Rachel’s Challenge will be coming around to the Belmont and Baldur areas on Thursday, October 29 collecting non-perishable items as part of the We Scare Hunger campaign. Items will be delivered to local food banks to assist the needy. We are also encouraging kids to bring a food item with them to school any time before November 1st. On Friday, October 30, the High School Student Council will be having an Alzheimer's coffee break from 10:10 a.m.-10:20 a.m. The community is invited to come make a donation to Alzheimer's and enjoy a cup of coffee and a cookie.
