F ROM THE PASTOR
Help Us to Help a Refugee Family St. Athanasius Parish is joining St. Agnes Parish and several other Reading churches in helping to resettle a refugee family. Reading People Organized to Welcome Refugees (POWR), a program spearheaded by St. Agnes parishioners and organized under the auspices of Catholic Charities, assists local area refugee resettlement by providing essential financial and social support to a family fleeing war, famine, or poverty. The family, as yet unknown, could come from any ethnic or religious group, will be legally admitted into the country after undergoing multiple background checks over a period of years, and will be eligible to work and to pursue U.S. citizenship.
Reading POWR’s role will be to locate and furnish a modest apartment for the family, stock their kitchen cupboard with food, welcome them at the airport, and then provide both a rental subsidy and community support for a period of six months as they adjust to life in America. Later, there will be a need for people to provide English language conversation, occasional driving, and general orientation to the area, including knowledge of local markets, services, and public transportation. Though Catholic Charities will assist the family to find employment as well as provide a case manager throughout the six months of resettlement, all the other dimensions of helping to them start a new life require volunteer participation.
Reading POWR’s next meeting is Tuesday, October 10th, 7p.m. at the St. Agnes Parish Center, 2nd floor. Please contact Lee Bianchetto at (781) 670-0108 or e-mail him at
[email protected] to join. All are welcome to attend! Our parish will be contributing financially to Reading POWR proportionate to the other churches in town, but those who would like to contribute directly can mail a check payable to “St. Agnes Parish,” (with “Refugee Support” on the memo line) to Reading POWR, P.O. Box 38, Reading, MA 01867. Also, donors can pay on-line via www.gofundme.com/readingpowr.

Knights of Columbus “Tootsie Roll” Drive
Hosted by Katie Curtis
The Knights will be at the doors of the church this weekend collecting for The Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities, commonly called the “Tootsie Roll Drive.” All the proceeds from this collection go into a charity fund that is managed by the State Chapter and assists personswith intellectual disabilities, regardless of age, and children with physical handicaps who have not reached their 20th birthday. Some of the ways they are used are to purchase wheel chairs, hearing aids, building handicap ramps, etc. These funds are available to all, not just K of C members. Contact the local Grand Knight, Dick Coco,
[email protected], for an application.
Starting October 7th and every other Saturday after the 4:00 Mass. We will pray for each other, for our country, and for the world. Our first four meetings will be 10/7, 10/21, 11/4, and 11/18. To start, the meetings will be an hour long. The purpose of this is for all our parishioners to have a place to bring their intentions and pray together as a community. Come for five minutes or stay the whole time.

Saint Anthony’s October visit to Boston
Parish Staff
Two relics of Saint Anthony from the Basilica in Padua will be brought to the Boston area in Massachusetts by Fr. Mario Conte from Friday 6 to Sunday 15 October. One of the reliquaries contains the Saint’s ‘floating rib’, and was venerated by both Pope Francis, when he was Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, and by Sister Lucy, one of the three seers of Fatima, when it was taken to her convent, the Monastery of Carmelite nuns at Coimbra, in January 1995. The reliquary, therefore, has special meaning this year as we celebrate the centenary of the Fatima apparitions.
