2017 Graduation Survey Attention class of 2017: The LOHS Counseling Department is looking to improve communication and update data to students and parents surrounding the college search process and post high school planning.

This graduation survey is Of GREAT importance to us as is the information surrounding admission decisions and knowing where to send your final transcript. The counseling department would also appreciate senior’s feedback on some questions to critical issues that may help us deliver our counseling and post high school services more effectively. The 2017 graduation survey is part of the senior checkout process and is required. Please don’t delay and take a few moments now to complete the short survey on Naviance.

Credit to make-up courses with failed grades and credit to enhance grades can be earned through summer sessions, recognized correspondence schools, state approved alternative programs, evening high school, college/university, community college, and accredited training institutions, and at LOHS. In the event that the class is not taken at LOHS, students need to arrange for an Official Transcript from the approved institution to be sent to their LOHS Counselor upon coursework completion. NOTE: Make-up credits DO NOT replace grades earned in LOHS classes but are averaged into the student’s GPA. To ensure students are signed up for the correct class, students must complete the “Off-Campus Credit” form prior to enrolling in any off-campus experience. Forms are available on the LOHS Website under Counseling, or in the Counseling office. A list of reputable programs/approved courses is also available within the LOHS Counseling website or on the next page.

Here are some ideas based on what students have done in the past. Some are local summer programs, some are activities based at school or in our community, and some take students far afield. The best involvements are those that follow from your own interests and passions. 1. Student member of LO City Council 2. Student member of LO Parks Department Board 3. Student columnist for LO Review or Oregonian 4. Student member of LO Library Board 5. Volunteer at Oregon Historical Society, Portland Art Museum, OMSI (counselor at OMSI camps in the summer, demonstrator of experiments for school groups during the year), the Zoo 6. Start your own business (landscaping, teaching computer skills to seniors, shuttle service to airport, designing apparel and selling it, designing websites for companies or individuals) 7. Free Geek 8. Take a summer course at Saturday Academy (forensic medicine, rocketry, cartooning). 9. Try out for a play in a production in Portland.

____________________________________________________________________________ SAT, ACT & PSAT TESTING ACCOMMODATIONS

Students with documented disabilities, an Individual Education Program (IEP), or a 504 Plan, who would like to have testing accommodations for the SAT, ACT or PSAT, are not automatically granted those accommodations. Requests for accommodations typically have a deadline 6-8 weeks before the test is proctored. Approval of accommodations is based on the impact a disability has on a student’s ability to take a test. Accommodations must be applied for and approved before the test is given. Additional information about testing accommodations can be found online at www.actstudent.org or www.collegeboard.org or by speaking with your student’s counselor or case manager.

Attention Juniors!

Consider Cleaning Up Your Social Media Accounts this summer Students today have grown up with Social Media. They typically have accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and many others that have popped up. There is a downside though to having all these accounts. It makes it easier for admissions officers to do their own sleuthing about potential students. A recent study by Kaplan showed 40% of admissions officers currently check the social media accounts of applicants. Students brazen enough to post pictures of them smoking, drinking or doing other nefarious things do so at their own risk. It could be the difference between getting accepted or rejected to their college of choice. Athletes are at particular risk as many coaches are now using Social Media in their recruitment of athletes. Many athletes receive full or partial scholarships so posting the wrong thing could cost your students big time. There are countless stories of athletes being expelled from College for getting caught doing things they shouldn’t be doing so it is more important than ever for students to create a positive impression with their Social Media as coaches may not extend that scholarship offer if they see something that might concern them about the students future behavior. So how can you help your child? Encourage them to post positive images of who they are. Post pictures with their friends, family and engaging in school activities and sports. Encourage them to post about their passions, but to stay away from anything that can be construed as controversial or confrontational. Social media is a great way for them to engage with their colleges of interest by liking their pages and following their blogs so they can get updated information on a regular basis, but keep in mind it makes it easier for personnel of those colleges to check on them as well. You can’t dictate what your students post to their Social Media accounts when they are away from school. However, letting them know about the potential ramifications of what they do post is a great service you can provide. Resource: linkforcounselors.com

Creating a Game Plan!

Start thinking about your interests…. - What majors interest you? - Do you want to attend a liberal arts college? -Research-focused institution? -Co-op Program?

What’s out there? - Visit! Visit! Visit! - When are the Open Houses? - Is there an overnight visit program?

What are the most important “must haves”? - Is class size important to you? - Do you want to attend a school with Division I Athletics? - Is a study Abroad Program in your future?

Keep thinking about your interests…. - What kind of clubs do you want to join? - Are you comfortable living away from home? - How long of a commute would be feasible? - Do you learn better in lectures, small groups, participating in hands on experiences?

Have a meaningful discussion with parents about finances. - What types of financial aid might you be eligible for? - What types of merit scholarships does each school offer? - What are some scholarships that you can apply for? - How much debt are you comfortable taking on?

If you don’t know what your future goals are or if you are still exploring your options, “My Game Plan” will help you start to ask those important questions…Take MY GAME PLAN survey on Naviance. Log on and go to the ABOUT ME tab to get started.

The list of scholarships below are just a few highlighted ones in the local area to get you started. To get a full up-to date scholarship list, please log on to Naviance.
