As teachers begin using Integrated Performance Assessments with their students they recognize the need to structure their lessons differently in order to prepare their students for these evaluations. In this workshop, Lisa Shepard (author of Madame’s Musings) will guide participants through the process of selecting authentic resources and designing lessons which incorporate these materials across all communicative modes. Cleveland International Film Fest FilmSlam Cleveland International Film Fest

Now going into its 26th year, FilmSlam is the Cleveland International Film Festival’s (CIFF) media literacy program and mini-festival of films for middle, junior high, and high school students. FilmSlam annually impacts the lives of young people (including over 9,300 students from 108 schools throughout 18 Northeast Ohio counties in 2017) by giving them the opportunity to see remarkable films by some of the world's most innovative filmmakers. FilmSlam programming will take place in 2018 during the 42nd CIFF on the mornings of April 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 at Tower City Cinemas in Tower City Center. Ohio Foreign Language Association Attendees have the opportunity to experience FilmSlam, the Cleveland International Film Festival’s longest running educational program for students (grades 5-12). You can choose an 80 minute Shorts Program offered in the following languages: Spanish, French, German, Chinese and/or Arabic. Prior to the screening, you will receive a study guide that goes along with the films in your language program. Screenings will be followed by a post-film Q&A with filmmakers. *When you attend a FilmSlam screening you will receive a voucher ($16) that you can exchange for a ticket to any screening at the Cleveland International Film Festival.

My Summer Study Experience in Mexico Tina Bils Cory-Rawson High School

Many of us are comfortable traveling in Mexico but others may be hesitant to explore this culturally rich country. Until last summer, I was one of the hesitant ones until I received last year's OFLA scholarship to study at the Cemanahuac Spanish School in central Mexico. I met Spanish teachers from across the country, participated in meaningful group activities, and explored Mexico City on my own. Although I was nervous prior to this experience, I am now anticipating my next trip. I will share my experiences and, hopefully, help you to feel more comfortable planning your own adventure in Mexico.
