INTRODUCTION Red Star Down was developed not only to be played but also to show what an actual Firefight! operation looks like. It’s one thing to work your way through the core book’s Preparing an Operation chapter but it’s another to actually see an operation complete and ready to go. This document has been divided into two main parts to ease compartmentalization; Open Info is for the Operators, and Sensitive Info for the OPFOR team. In addition to the operation itself, a setting titled ‘Does Not Exist’ is included. It is a slightly cinematic one designed to provide a foundation for long running campaigns. Feel free to shape the concept to fit your style of play or to use it as inspiration for your own ideas. We’d love to hear about them. @firefightrp

Everyone has heard of Delta Force. Some are aware of DEVGRU. Whispered stories of a new special forces unit named Bluestreak waft around K Street dinner parties like the smoke of supposedly illegal Cuban cigars. Conventional wisdom says that the new group should fall under Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) like Delta. But all Freedom of Information Act requests on the subject are returned DOES NOT EXIST. As an Operator you are a member of Special Missions Unit Bluestreak. Your job is to tackle the missions where reality blurs with fiction.

Background US agents using an unconventional IFF transponder, called The Doppelgänger, spoofed a Russian flight to Iran. The goal of operation Ruby Yacht was to ferry a compact nuclear device, based on cutting edge Russian EMP weapons technology, back to a secret CIA base somewhere in the northern Caucuses. The Russians have dubbed the device Groza which translates to Thunderstorm. En route to the the secret base, Red Star, the modified An–12 Cub used in the operation crashed in a rural area near the shared borders of Georgia, Chechnya, and Dagestan.

They have also learned that nuclear scientist, Dr. Khayyam who fled Iran in 1991 is in the area and are charged with apprehending him dead or alive. They are also aware that they were the subject of

Important Personalities Doctor Omar Khayyam In mid 1991 along side the aftermath of Desert Storm the doctor fled Iran to Great Britain. Eight weeks prior to Red Star going down, Dr. Khayyam was kidnapped in London where he was to give a technical presentation to an international body of scientists. Until very recently it was believed that he was taken by Iranian agents.

Samal Daudov Daudov was an engineering student at Moscow Polytechnic when he was ejected because of his radical views. He drifted to Afghanistan where he became a member of the Mujahideen. There he became more radicalized but at the same time disillusioned with the backwardness of his peers which helped make the decision to go back home - a small village on the 8
border of Azerbaijan and Dagestan. Later he saw action in Chechnya as a mid-level commander. After the Invasion of Dagestan during the Second Chechen War, he found himself on the losing side where he was fighting not only the Russians but also the Dagestanis. After the conflict he went back home to where he created his own group called Tovba. Finally he was the top leader.

The next day a thin coat of clear coat was applied to give the finish a little extra durability.

Letter Carried By OPFOR Since this prop is printable we’ve gone ahead and put most of it together to make your game prep easier. When fielded, the letter prop is bundled up inside of an envelope along with its accompanying Challenge cards. The letter portion also presents additional information and instructions to the Operator team. Note that indigenous NPCs can simply read the letter bypassing all Challenges. The bits list:

Real life IFF transponders are pretty nondescript metal boxes. Since this is supposed to be something special and is very likely an experimental prototype we can have some fun with how it looks. Let’s assume that it broke loose from its rack mount enclosure and is damaged a little. The transponder looks mostly intact but is

non-operational in its current state. The transponder prop was put together with bits we’ve collected (and often recycled) over time. The bits list: • Rack mount guitar processor • Dead DVD player • Dead internal hard drive • Dead external hard drive in enclosure • Dead relay from a heat pump • Empty printer cartridges of various colors • Dead heating element from a hot water tank • Brass plumbing fitting (holding up the heating element) from home remodelling • Foil duct tape Your transponder doesn’t have to look anything like ours. Use whatever you have at hand and have fun. 24
Rescue Doctor Khayyam Computer If you have an old laptop that you wouldn’t be upset if it gets hit by a stray BB, great! If not, search local thrift stores and check around in your circle of friends. You should be able to pick up a non-functioning laptop cheap that sees use over and over. They’re a staple of Firefight! operations.
The computer is tagged with a Challenge card which handles all of the game information.
Suicide Belt In-game, a Bluetooth link has been established between the phone and the computer. If the Bluetooth link is interrupted then the computer calls the phone to detonate the explosives package on the belt thus killing Doctor Khayyam. It can also be detonated remotely by anyone who knows the phone number. If the computer you use is a laptop here’s an idea to prevent scooping it up and scooting away with the doctor in tow. The laptop cannot run on battery power and is required to be plugged into an AC power source. Virtually of course.
The computer doesn’t have to be functional at all. It instead acts as a prop-point that draws the attention of the Operators. 25

First, we scuffed the lid with fine steel wool so that the spray paint would stick better. Then we applied the black spray paint. Once that was dry we applied a light layer of clear coat to help it stand up better out in the field. The main container has an interesting shape so to play that up we taped off the panels and spray painted the “frame” silver. We let that dry for several hours and hit it again with black spray paint.
Cyclic Electron Guns
To give it that battle damaged look just pull the masking tape off the panels without regard to precision. We applied a layer of clear coat to the entire inside of the container to help hold the silver in place. What’s nice is that the prop will stand up to abrasion because almost all of the paint is on the inside. The painted container sits on top of the already black dish strainer.
This is the component that we built to be placed in a tree. The bits list:
