Andre Hitchcock Reflection The experience at Orange Grove with the dementia simulation was an eye opening experience. For me, it gave me a realistic view of what older adults who suffer from dementia may go through. This incident has allowed me to become more empathetic to the elder community. It gather it can be very frustrating being in pain, trouble seeing, feeling, and hearing, due to cognitive disorders. I see the importance of geriatric social work and the desire to improve the quality of life for older adults. Chapter 6 talks about an intervention for people with dementia. One of the benefits is using validation therapy. The principles of the therapy constitutes of not attempting to reinforce or extinguish behaviors that is troublesome or annoying, but accepts such behavior as an attempt on the part of the older adult trying to communicate some need, thought, or feeling. Validation therapy is not always successful though. Controlled studies have found no statistically significant connection between the use of a validation approach and improvements in behaviors among older adults. Simulated presence therapy is a therapeutic approach developed to address problem behaviors in older adults with dementia, specifically verbal and physical aggression. The attachment theory is the bases for this approach. The process of healthy attachments to caregivers and dementia suffers aims to simulate a healthy environment where no suffers can sense familiarity in hopes to decrease aggressive behaviors. There are a few medications out to help manage dementia symptoms, particularly, Alzheimer's disease. Although there is not a cure for the disease, medications have been effective at preventing or stopping the course of the disease. With the seriousness of the mental disorders affecting a high percent of the aging population, it is vital professionals come together as teams to improve their quality of life.
