Magazine Mosaics: Variations on a Theme Instructor: Debbie Reynolds Course Outline: Day 1 ● Introduce participants to example of various options for their mosaics. (ELMO required) ● Participants may already have ideas for their projects and even their visual reference (photograph) ● Discuss techniques that would fit the participants’ projects ● Give advice on types of subjects best suited to mosaic process ● Have participants go through magazines to look for: Colors, textures, motifs, hair, fur, etc. ● Sort Colors according to color wheel (tables pushed together) ● Sort Black & White; Patterns, Textures, etc. ● Participants collect colors, etc. for their projects ● As time allows, demonstrate tearing methods, showing how to find the grain of the paper. ● Tearing with color to the edge of paper and tearing with white showing. ● Demonstrate tearing to isolate a motif. ● As time allows, demonstrate gluing along an edge to make a sharp line, to make a jagged or fringed line. Day 2 1) Show examples in steps of completing background first and then layering motif on top. 2) Show examples of completing edge of animal and filling in toward center to give threedimensional effect. 3) Stress that outer edge is not glued down allowing background paper to be tucked underneath. 4) Landscapes: discuss aerial perspective techniques to show depth/distance. 5) Discuss participants’ projects with class, give advice as needed. Participants work on own projects. Following days: As participants complete projects, demonstrate how to use Mod pogde (matte) as a sealer & finisher unless project will be put into frame with glass. Final class: Participants present their works to class. Celebrate their creativity!
