OCEAN VIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PTA’S NEWSLETTER

THE COUGAR CHRONICLE DECEMBER 2016/JANUARY 2017 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The holiday season is definitely here! I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving break and that your family found much relaxation and rest. The month of December will quickly draw to a close, but I definitely want to make mention of some noteworthy news and information: Since the beginning of the school year, we have witnessed some amazing school events and activities including Jump Start Night, Genevieve’s Fundraiser, Walk-to-School Day, Student Council Elections, Red Ribbon Week, Bully Prevention Week, OV Dinner Auction, PTA Reflections, and Thanksgiving Can Food Drive to name a few. I am thankful for our entire OV Team and parent/ teacher coordinators for the success of these events. In the month of December, Student Council has organized our annual 5 Days of Holiday Cheer & Giving the week of December 12-16, including a toy drive and dress-up days. The 6th grade Band Concert will be held at Paulding Middle School on December 14, and our OV Winter Parties will be held on December 16 before we all take a break from school until January 9. In January, we will have no school on Monday, January 16th, as we honor Martin Luther King, Jr. We are also excited to host our fourth annual Winter Family STEAM Night in late January. Intervention at Ocean View is definitely in full swing. We have a tremendous Intervention Coordinator, Trisha Oksner and Literacy Support Tutor (LST) extraordinaire, Pat Madden, supporting our students who need extra academic support in a small group setting. We will have a second LST beginning in January, a wonderful new teacher, Ashley Clarkson. It should be noted

that some of the costs associated with our intervention services are funded through the generous financial support of OV PTA. We feel blessed to have this amazing support from our parent partners so all of our students can achieve success. Thank you! On behalf of the staff and students of Ocean View, I want to thank the organizers, sponsors, volunteers, and donors who were part of Alien Invasion Dinner and Auction. Approximately $47,000 was raised for our school this year and we couldn’t be more thrilled! This money goes directly to providing school activities, support personnel, classroom supplies, technology, buses for field trips, assemblies, and our new Outdoor Learning Center construction. Our school community is absolutely the most generous, caring, and supportive group on the Central Coast. The Ocean View staff and students thanks you all! Please remember that attendance at school each day is very important to the academic success of students. Being on time to school each day is also important. It can be very distracting to teachers and the learning environment when students arrive late. Students will be marked tardy if they come to class after 8:40am T-Fri and 9:30am on Monday. The hustle and bustle of the season can sometimes be overwhelming…remember to enjoy the precious moments with family and friends, the moments which always seem to fly by so quickly! Have a wonderful month of December and January. Mrs. Sarah Butler “Out of the questions of students come most of the creative ideas and discoveries.” ~ Ellen Langer

Auction raises $47,000! The aliens were out in full force at the Oceano Community Center for our 5th Annual Dinner & Auction. The event raised over $47,000 to support all of our PTA programs at Ocean View. Mrs. Butler is in the process of ordering 30 Chrome Books for our kids and this was all made possible as part of our FundA-Need program at the event. Thank you so much to all the volunteers, party going parents and friends, sponsors, and staff that made this event possible. It was such a fun evening. If you would like to get more involved in this event and the planning for next year, please email oceanviewcougarspta@ gmail.com.

Outdoor Learning Center Gets State Approval! You

may have been wondering what is going on with our Outdoor Learning Center — the project was more involved than we ever imagined. Because the project requires extensive building including ADA access we needed to get a state permit which in turn required us to get an architect to lay out official plans. All of that took time, but we have finally gotten through our design and approval phase and are ready to make this happen. We need your help! If you would like to get involved please email [email protected]. We can’t wait for our kids to start utilizing this area!

Attention Fabulous Ocean View stars! Over the holiday break is the perfect time to pick (and practice) your amazing act for our annual Ocean View Talent Show. The OV Talent Show will be performed at the Clark Center on March 7th. We are looking for all types of acts and talents — singers, dancers, musicians, magicians - you name it! 6th graders - Don't miss out on this fun opportunity to perform in a warm and super supportive environment. Join the 6th grade dance and help MC the event!

Auditions are Monday, January 23 and Thursday, January 26th in the cafeteria immediately after school. Come with your music selection and as much of your act prepared as possible. Interested in being a 6th grade MC? Come to auditions with a short story or monologue to share. Look for the flyer coming home soon for more information and the required parental permission slip. Questions? Contact Dana Robertson at [email protected] or 805-440-6017

Cougar Toy Drive This is the season for giving, and our Cougar community went above and beyond to ensure many, many children will be blessed this year! Thank you, one and all, for your amazing generosity! Thank you also to our wonderful OV Student Council who organized and collected all of these gifts in our annual toy drive. Truly a wonderful event all around.
