Market held firm today through out the day after an initial blip on the down side during the first half an hour of trading. Scrip specific buying continued and intensified after the inflation for the week was better than market expectations. Market breadth was strong as small caps and mid caps contributed to the rally. Mutual Funds were expected to support stocks in order to prop up their year-end net asset values (NAVs). Among the Sensex pack, 19 advanced while 11 declined. India’s wholesale price index at 6.46% was slightly below a forecast of 6.50%. Power PSU, NTPC was the top gainer up nearly 3%. Defensive buying was witnessed in pharma space with Ranbaxy and Dr. Reddy’s both rising more than 2% each. Index heavyweight, ITC also surged more than 2% with good volumes. IT pack was a mixed bag with Infosys just managing to end in the green while TCS and Wipro ended in the red.
