Clothing Advice ✓ Since I knew that I was going home for school breaks, I decided that it was best to bring my summer clothing to college and then switch it out for warmer clothing when I headed home. For this list, though, I included both summer and winter items
Food Advice ✓ Some dining plan let you eat pretty much whenever you want, but others only allow you a certain number of entries into the dining hall per semester. If you get the limited option, you will have to eat out a lot or prepare meals on your own. I suggest the latter. ✓ I'm not proud of it, but I once spent a whole day studying in my school's dining hall in between eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Okay, I’m a little proud. It’s possible folks. (See Cheap College Tip #1 below) ✓ If, on the other hand, you have an unlimited plan, I would suggest that you cut down on the amount you buy from the store since you are probably already paying a bunch for your dining plan. ✓ Lastly, I would wait to buy any food items until after you get to college, even it's not something that's going to expire any time soon. It's no fun to have to lug extra weight when you're moving in. Cheap College Tip #1: If you have a meal plan with a fixed number of entries to the dining, and you're running out, there's no limit to how long you can stay in the dining hall. This means that if you can find a quiet enough place to study after lunch, you can stay until dinner. Cheap College Tip #2: One thing I would say to anyone buying their own groceries for the first time is to buy generic goods whenever you can. I spent a few days in the summer printing out coupons, but when I finally went shopping, I realized that most of the "deals" I was looking at were still more expensive than the store brands.
Kitchen Advice ✓ The Kitchen depends on what is provided to you. I shared a stove/oven, microwave, and dishwasher with a few other girls, so I brought lots of cooking/baking items. Make sure you know what cooking equipment you have available before buying things you don't need.
