Registration Opening Session - Deb West Break Session 1 Session 2 Lunch (on your own) Session 3 Session 4
(1) Observation and Data Collection and Reporting (Jeff Borchardt) Participants will learn how to develop and use effective and efficient data collection and analysis system for a variety of behaviors. Methods of collecting data on discrete and ongoing behaviors will be demonstrated and explained. Simple and easy visual analysis tools will also be presented with general guidelines for making data-based decisions. (2) Visual Schedules/Visual Strategies (Andrea Downing) Overview of common visual strategies that can be used when working with students across disability areas to support comprehension and positive behaviors. Tools such as visual cues, token boards, visual schedules, duration maps, first/then board, contingency maps, written cues, and checklists will be explored. (3) High Functioning ASD 101 (Deb West) (Sessions 1 & 2 only). Characteristics of students with ASD and average to above-average intelligence and strategies for working with them. (4) How to Write a Social Story on the Go (Deb West) (Sessions 3 & 4 only) Learn the basics of writing social stories for students with Autism and DCD. (5) Sensory and Self-Regulation Strategies (Naomi Tague-Hamlin/Sonia Hammil) Introduction to a variety of physical and sensory-based activities that may be incorporated into a student's daily schedule. Learn to appreciate how we all seek out ways to regulate our nervous system for maximum productivity. (6) Supporting Children Who Have Experienced Trauma (Jennifer Goerger, Lighthouse) The participants will learn what are considered traumatic events in a child's life, how would this present in a child's behavior, and interventions working with children who have experienced trauma. (7) Addiction (Leah Falk, Lighthouse) In this session, you will gain some insight into how student or parent addiction to drugs or alcohol can impact the family as a whole. (8) Verbal Deescalation (Howard Armstrong) This training will emphasize use of positive behavioral supports and limit setting strategies proven to be effective with students who exhibit challenging behaviors. Participants will learn practices to deescalate potentially aggressive and violent students and maintain control of their emotions and behaviors. (9) Secondary Trauma (Elizabeth Szybatka, Lighthouse) When we work with others who have experienced trauma, we often hear or witness the results of that trauma through story telling, aggression, or other extreme behaviors. We will learn about how these experiences impact our own lives and how secondary trauma can lead to fatigue and burnout. We will also learn about self-care and how to combat secondary trauma. (10) Making Accommodations for Students in General Ed Classroom (Monica Carson) This session will give an overview of providing curriculum adaptations for students in general education classrooms. Participants will learn the difference between accommodations and modifications, federal law requirements, and how to administer accommodations during instruction and assessment. Several examples of accommodations and modifications will be provided as well. (11) Understanding the Special Education Process and Your Role as a Paraprofessional (Erin Dohrmann) This session will help you better understand (a) the special education process and how the Evaluation Report and IEP impacts your job and (b) the knowledge and skills that a paraprofessional needs to work effectively with students' disabilities and fellow staff members (Do's and Don'ts as a paraprofessional, working effectively with students and staff).
Please Note: Timesheets will be available from your district on the day of training. You will be paid your normal wage. You must register for all four breakout sessions.
