Child Discipline policy

At kids R fun, we believe: 1.

3.

Discipline help children develop a sense of responsibility.

4.

to acknowledge

The goal of effective discipline is to foster acceptable and appropriate behavior in the child. Disciplining children is one of the most important yet difficult responsibilities of our staff and there can be no short cuts Aggressive behavior will not be tolerated and may result in dismal of the child from the program. Any child who is harmful to others or themselves will be disciplined accordingly. Age, culture and the developmental level of the child will

be taken into consideration when disciplining a child. Parents and educators will collaborate and use different strategies to intervene in the child’s wellbeing. Disciplinary measures will be carried out to help children learn that they are in control of their own behavior and should be responsible for their own actions. Steps to be taken when discipline a child will include: •Positive guidance: When children are doing well, it is important for the staff

this through words or gestures. Positive reinforcement helps children build self-confidence and encourages them to repeat desired behaviours. The staff will also remind the child of our program rules and explain why certain behaviors are not acceptable. Depending on the situation, the staff might have to remove the child from the group into a private place to clearly communicate about our expectations; such as respecting each other. A child will be assured of good care and love regardless of the behavior. The children 3+ years of age will be reminded of the consequences. •Redirection: After explaining the consequences to the child, the next step is to re-direct them if the behavior continues. Children feel empowered when they make choices. However, before giving choices, emphasize to the

child what happens to others when he or she portrays a certain behavior. For example, “when you grab the car from Ann, it makes her angry”. Then the choice - Would you like to have another car or wait for Ann to finish?

•Prevention: kids R fun believes that any child disciplinary action taken must be reasonable considering other factors that could have triggered the behavior. Prevention of improper behavior is the best when considering a policy that will guide the children’s behavior. Setting up basic classroom ground rules for the children as well as designing the space that is motivating for the children; it will encourage positive behavior.

•Communication to parents: Parents should be notified immediately in case of major or reoccurring behavioral challenges. Teachers should provide a detailed account of any incidents and parents should be required to sign the documents, indicating that they have read and

understand what happened. The director should be aware of any ongoing issues. Parents will be required to sign a discipline report acknowledging that their child either cannot or will not control their own behavior after warnings and redirection with consequences. With parents’ consent, the day care will seek help

from oth er agen cies that might help to assess the child’s behavior. If a parent do e s not like or agree to h ave other a gencies involved, parents will be called i mme diate ly if the aggressive behavior occurs.

•The daycare will tolerate the behavior for only 3 occurrences. The fourth one will result in removal of the child fr om the program. All this will be documented and kept in the child’s file.

mergency evacuations drills are practiced on a monthly basis to ensure children and teachers

learn how to respond to emergency situations such as fire outbreak. In case of a real fire outbreak the emergency procedure must be followed:

• Everybody in the building has to evacuate the exit doors which are well marked. The Director or the designated staff member in charge call 911. The staff members take children to the safe environment If possible one of the staff will stay at the facility to meet the emergency response unit when it arrives or alternatively will notify the response unit of the staff’s location. • The teachers in each classroom will tell the children to line up quickly and quietly and follow them to the nearest emergency exit.

• Staff and children assemble at the main street on the front of the building or at the ally at the back of the building (according to which exit they use) and each senior teacher is to do an initial child count using her attendance sheet to make sure her class is accounted for. Director checks all • The the classrooms; including the kitchen, closets and washrooms. She/he is also responsible for taking with them the day’s attendance records, first aid kit and the portable Emergency records

• The Director will do a secondary child count to make sure that all children are present and accounted for and that the count coincides with the facilities attendance records. • Children will then be taken

immediately to the designated meeting place, located at 1000, 5th Ave, SW Catholic School Center, Children will be able to walk to the evacuating place which does not required Keys.

• The Director is responsible for the final child count. • The children remain at that location until the parents have been notified to pick up their children or until Calgary Fire/ Police personnel have deemed the premises safe. No one may re-enter the building until authorized.

3838 Child Abuse and Neglect

39

„„ We are required by law to watch for signs of child abuse and neglect, Our staff members adhere to a set of guidelines relating to the prevention and reporting of child abuse and neglect. Children and families have a right to expect an environment that is safe and free from any abuse or neglect. Any staff member, including the manager or volunteer, who has been accused of allegedly inflicting abuse or neglecting a child will be given a warning and suspended from work until the completion of an investigation by the Interior Licensing Authority officer. „„ A replacement staff member holding equal or higher qualifications will be appointed to take over the job until the investigation end. „„ Any staff member, including the manager or volunteer who has knowledge of an incident of suspected abuse has the responsibility to report such an incident immediately to their supervisor and/or the Manager. Failure on the part of any witness to report such an incident will result in disciplinary action and possible suspension from employment. This policy does not negate a staff member’s right to move away from a child who is acting in a way that might harm the staff provided that the child is left in a safe situation. The expectation in these instances is that the staff member will immediately report incidents to the supervisor. In order to maintain an atmosphere in which children, families and staff live and work without fear of abuse, every possible effort will be made to ensure that all reported incidents are thoroughly investigated and dealt with expeditiously. „„ If abuse of a child is suspected or a child discloses an incident of abuse, the following Six Steps will be followed: 1.
