EMMANUEL EPISCOPAL CHURCH INTRODUCING THE EPISCOPAL WAY PART 4: A WORSHIPFUL WAY SACRAMENTS & LITURGY SACRAMENTS Sacrament: An outward and visible sign of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as a sure and certain means by which we receive that grace. –BCP 857 Sacrament: from Latin ‘sacramentum.’ From Greek, ‘mysterion.’ Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries. 1 Corinthians 4:1 Grace: God’s favor toward us, unearned and undeserved; by grace God forgives our sins, enlightens our minds, stirs our hearts, and strengthens our wills. –BCP 858

THE TWO GREAT SACRAMENTS Holy Baptism Adoption as God’s children Members of Body of Christ, the Church Inheritors of the kingdom of God The outward and visible sign: Water Administered in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The inward and spiritual grace: Union with Christ in his death and resurrection Birth into God’s family, the Church Forgiveness of sins, New life in the Holy Spirit Requirements for Baptism: Renounce Satan Repent of sins Accept Jesus as Lord and Savior Justification for Infant Baptism: To share citizenship in the New Covenant To be members of Christ To be among God’s redeemed Promises carried out for them by parents, godparents, and the Christian community Promise to bring children up in the Church Promise to train children to know and follow Christ

The Holy Eucharist Commanded by Christ for the continual remembrance of his life, death, and resurrection, until his coming again ‘Remembrance:’ from Greek ‘Anamnesis.’ To bring a past event into the present, so that it is as a present event. The Lord’s Table becomes the table in the Upper Room. The Altar rail becomes the disciples gathered around the table. The bread and wine are received as from the very hands of Jesus. The bread and wine are received as the very Body and Blood of Jesus. A Sacrifice The Church’s sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving The way that Christ’s sacrifice is made present (anamnesis), so that he may unite us to his one offering of himself. Outward and Visible Signs Bread Wine Given and received according to Christ’s command Inward and Spiritual Grace The Body and Blood of Christ, given to his people, and received by faith Benefits Forgiveness of sins Strengthen union with Christ and each other Foretaste of the heavenly banquet which is our nourishment for eternal life Requirements Examine our lives Repent of our sins Be in love and charity with all people OTHER SACRAMENTAL RITES Confirmation: a mature commitment to Christ and the Church Ordination: the authority and grace of the Holy Spirit to serve as bishop, priest, or deacon, through prayer and laying on of hands by bishops. Holy Matrimony: Christian marriage, in which a couple enters into a life-long union, makes vows before God and the Church, and receives the grace and blessing of God to help them fulfill their vows. Unction of the Sick: Anointing with oil, or laying on of hands, to receive God’s grace for the healing of spirit, mind, and body.

THE LITURGY OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST Liturgy: The Work of the People Parts of the Church Nave – the place where the congregation gathers Chancel – the choir Sanctuary – the ‘holy place.’ The area behind the altar rail. Baptistery – the gathering place around the baptismal font The Narthex – The ‘Little Closet,’ the entryway into the church. The Sacristy – The room where the linens and vessels used in worship are stored. The Tabernacle – the niche in the altar where the Reserved Sacrament is stored The Lectern – the stand where the Bible rests, and where the Lessons are read The Pulpit – The place from which the sermon is given
