Some vehicles may experience inadvertent ignition key (WIN/FOBIK) displacement from the run to accessory position while driving, causing the engine and passive restraint systems - including the airbags - to shut off, increasing the risk of a crash and personal injury to vehicle occupants. Description of the Safety Risk : If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including - but not limited to - air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash. July 01, 2014: Volkswagen files amendment to add 2009 model year Volkswagen Routan vehicles to existing safety recall 28G1. August 21,2014: Volkswagen sent interim customer notification to affected customers. August 2014 - March 2015: Volkswagen makes numerous requests to Chrysler regarding recall repair remedy and parts supply plan for recall implementation. March 07, 2015: Volkswagen was made aware of amended information regarding this recall via a news report and through various media outlets & contacted Chrysler for additional information. March 16, 2015: Volkswagen receives parts supply/build plan from Chrysler for WIN module kits. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Volkswagen will replace existing recall code 28G1 with a new recall code of 28H1.
Vehicles that received a WIN module replacement under recall 28G1 will not be included in the new recall code because the WIN modules installed in those vehicles do not have the safety defect.
Owners of 2010 model year Routan vehicles repaired with a trim ring under recall 28G1 will be re-notified under the new recall code. A new WIN module and keys will be installed in these vehicles free-of-charge under the new recall code. Owners of 2010 model year Routan vehicles that were not yet repaired under recall 28G1 will be renotified under the new recall code. A new WIN module and keys will be installed in these vehicles free-of-charge under the new recall code.
