ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT Monash Student Association: Located at the Clayton Campus of Monash University the MSA is made up of elected student representatives who represent all Clayton campus students on general issues such as quality of education, course costs and student welfare, as well as specific issues such as women's affairs and queer affairs. Wholefoods is a student-‐run vegetarian and vegan restaurant. Position Summary: The Wholefoods Restaurant Manager is responsible for the day to day management of the Wholefoods Restaurant. The Wholefoods Manager will attend Wholefoods collective meetings and genuinely attempt to work with the collective to achieve the Wholefoods constitutional aims. This position provides leadership, support and guidance to ensure that food quality standards, inventory levels, food safety guidelines and customer service expectations are met. As well the manager should maintain records of income and expenditures, food, supplies, personnel and equipment.
KEY RESULTS AREAS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Strategic • Provide advice and feedback to the Operations Manager – Retail & Events on strategic direction for the Wholefoods Restaurant. • Provide advice feedback to the Operations Manager – Retail & Events on success of events in the restaurant and ideas for further income generation. • Attend meetings and work with the Wholefoods Collective • Develop budgets for the restaurant. • Keeping abreast of trends and developments in the industry such as menus, trends in consumer tastes and management issues. • Identify key stakeholders/ industry professionals and maintain effective relationships to ensure best outcomes for the restaurant. • Facilitating the innovation of ideas for catering/hospitality services of the restaurant. • Planning new promotions and initiatives, and contributing to business development. 2. Operational • Supervises, coordinates and evaluates work of all wholefoods restaurant employees and volunteers in preparing and serving food, and cleaning facilities and utensils. • Works on collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator to organise volunteers. • Conducts planning and budgeting. • Manages a cost-‐effective program. • Forecasts and plans the purchase of food, supplies and equipment. • Oversees and/or participates in menu planning. • Responds to customer preferences and trends to plan menus that encourage participation. • Maintains required records including food production, inventory, income/expense, meal counts and personnel records. • Ensures that established sanitation and safety standards are maintained. • Oversees and participates in the preparation and serving of food. • Provide reports to the Operations Manager – Retail & Events on the monthly status of financials including analysis of the key financial performance indicators for areas of responsibility. 3. Policy, Procedures, Quality and Systems • Develop appropriate policies/ procedures and ensure staff adhere to them to avoid risk of MSA operating outside applicable legislative requirements. • Negotiate best rates for products to minimise costs. • Ensure equipment is tested and maintained to meet legislative requirements. • Contribute to policy or procedural initiatives. • Contribute to the continual development of policies and procedures across MSA. • Monitor external providers to ensure quality products and services. • Develop, implement and maintain an effective stock control and management system. • Monitor quality of the product and service provided. • Ensure Health and Safety regulations are strictly adhered to. 4. Leadership and Management • Manage the recruitment, induction and training of staff for the restaurant • Work in collaboration with the Volunteer coordinator to recruit volunteers for the restaurant. • Provide induction and training of volunteers for the restaurant. • Manage an effective and efficient rostering system. • Ensure OH&S compliance. • Provide continual feedback on staff performance. • Assess training needs in accordance with business demands. • Assist in the implementation of training programs. • Provide appropriate induction of restaurant staff and volunteers. • Ensure statutory requirements and MSA policy, are being adhered to by staff working within area of responsibility. Provide leadership to and supervision of the development of staff according to both personal development and organisational requirements Provide business guidance to the Wholefoods Collective (The Directional Advisery Committee of Wholefoods)
5. OH&S Requirements • Actively promote OH&S compliance within areas of responsibility • Conduct your own duties in a safe manner at all times, resulting in no injuries to yourself or others • Compliance with all relevant site OH&S requirements • Initiating OH&S activity such as risk assessments, inspections and ensuring reporting of all OH&S risks to senior managers • Ensuring employees under your supervision comply with OH&S training and instruction requirements • Ensuring all hazards and incidents are immediately reported and corrective actions implemented • Correct use of Personal Protective Equipment and equipment when required. KEY SELECTION CRITERIA Essential 1. Previous Restaurant Management Experience 2. Previous Experience working with a management committee or board 3. Food Safety Supervisor Certificate 4. Thorough understanding of OH&S requirements 5. A Proficient Communicator at all levels 6. Proven ability to write budgets and work within budget parameters 7. Proven experience in data and business analysis 8. Adaptable and proficient negotiating skills 9. Enthusiasm for working with and for students in the tertiary environment is essential. Desirable 1. Volunteer management experience 2. Menu planning and implementation experience 3. Familiarity with Point of Sale/Stock Control package 4. Proficient knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet skills’.
OTHER JOB RELATED INFORMATION This position will require work outside of normal working hours, in particular some evenings. There is an expectation that the position will be able to provide expert advice for major events. As an events manager this position will be working in conjunction with and as part of a team of staff, student office bearers and student volunteers supporting each other in the attainment of goals.
