Review "A sobering book, a book which focuses the mind and heart on the 'means of grace,' and a book which is practical, it stands recommended." Jesus said we should focus our minds and hearts on God above all else. No small task! Is there someone we can turn to for help? "Wisdom tells us to sit at the feet of our elders rather than the latest ministry fad," notes author Kyle Strobel. And is there a better elder to guide us than Jonathan Edwards? In Edwards, the eighteenth-century Puritan pastor and theologian, we find deep thought balanced with deep passion. Through his writings and practices, Edwards provides us with the tools—the "means of grace"—that make us receptive to God's work in our lives as we learn to abide in Christ. Here we find a well-rounded account of being formed for the glory of God. ● ● ● ●

There is more to Jonathan Edwards than "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." Much more. What most of us do know about Jonathan Edwards is limited to our junior high history class's reading of his famous sermon. If this is all you know about Edwards, you may "mistakenly believe that Edwards was somewhat obsessed with hellfire and brimestone." And you would be wrong. In his new book, "Formed for the Glory of God," Kyle Strobel introduces us to the Jonathan Edwards we never knew, but not intentionally. He does so by exploring the spiritual practices of Jonathan Edwards, the pastor-theologian of pre-Revolutionary Colonial America. As the book progresses, we learn - almost serendipitously - that Edwards was not obsessed with the wrath of God at all. He was overwhelmed by, and a captive of, the glory of God expressed through His absolute love for His creatures. Kyle helps us see that only those who themselves are captivated by God Himself as the fountain of love can ever hope that their spiritual practices will result in a deeper relationship with this God. This is the beginning point of spiritual formation - and its end. Most every book I have ever read on the spiritual disciplines begins and ends with the disciplines themselves: meditation, prayer, fasting, simplicity, solitude, worship, et al. The thesis of these books tends to point inward - to the self and to what we who are practicing the disciplines are doing - and the practices become ends in themselves. Not so with Kyle Strobel's "Formed for the Glory of God." Kyle makes the point (and makes it well) "...that spiritual formation is not simply doing spiritual disciplines. Spiritual formation is about a life oriented to God in Christ by the Spirit." Kyle begins his examination of the spiritual disciplines, not with the practices themselves, but rather with a big picture view of the whole of the Christian life; from where the Christian life begins not only with forgiveness found in Christ - but more importantly with our adoption into the family of God; not as escapism from the world, but rather as life with God in the world: "heavenly lives in [the world], lives defined by love," a life with God in the world made possible only by "a total renovation of the heart." The journey has a destination whose terminus is "standing before the God of love and beholding him as my Father, seeing him clearly and growing in knowledge of him for eternity." That is the goal spiritual practices aim us toward. Kyle lays the foundation for spiritual practices in an understanding that the practices themselves are merely the means of grace which God uses "to open up His life in the Son and the Spirit and to pull us into that life." We do not make ourselves holy through the spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting, meditation, et al. As we exercise the disciplines, we remain always in "a posture of dependence." "Rather than being grounded in human potential, Christian spirituality begins with complete dependence, utter neediness and alien righteousness." It is the Son of God through the Holy Spirit who does the transforming, not the disciplines, though we open ourselves to God's transforming grace as we avail ourselves of the means He has ordained to pour His grace into our lives. While the "Fathers" of modern spiritual formation no doubt knew this (Dallas Willard, Richard Foster, et al), Kyle Strobel puts flesh on it by pointing us to the spiritual practices of Jonathan Edwards which were foundationally rooted in an understanding of human depravity and inability. Edwards knew his own depraved heart well enough to also know that if anything good were to come from his praying, his meditating, his preaching, his Sabbath keeping - it would all be credited to the grace of God alone and not to any activity of his own devising. In this regard, Kyle's work takes us back to the 18th Century understanding of spiritual formation as a much needed follow-up to the 20th Century works on spiritual formation.

This is not your typical book on spiritual disciplines/practices. As a matter of fact, Kyle introduced me to two of Edwards's spiritual practices I had never heard of: soliloquy and conferencing. Kyle also helps us understand the very important distinction between meditation and contemplation (meditation involving some aspect of thinking about ourselves in relation to that which we are meditating upon, i.e. Scripture; contemplation focused solely on that which we are contemplating, i.e God's attribute of mercy, without regard to ourselves at all). By introducing us to Edwards's spiritual practices, Kyle points us to the end - the goal, the purpose - of the Christian life: not a vision of God and Heaven in "the sweet by and by," but a life with God NOW, and a full view of his beauty and glory NOW, available to me by God's grace opened to me through Sabbath, fasting, conferencing, soliloquy, silence and solitude, and prayer. Kyle has made Edwards reachable and readable for many who have found him neither, or misunderstood him altogether. Fear reading Edwards no more. If you read one book this summer with the goal of enriching your relationship with God, it MUST be this one. Why did I love this book so much? Because when I closed it, I wanted to meet God in solitude, to behold the beauty of his love, and grow in my knowledge of Him. Thanks to this book, I have the tools to ascend that summit where I'm certain God is waiting. 15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A devotional book for everyone! Edwards true religion as spiritual formation By J. Nitta My hats off to Kyle Stobel! His latest book Formed for the Glory of God is actually a gift from God to all of us and helpful for a number of reasons. The first way this book is helpful is it makes Edwards accessible to more people. Frankly, Edwards, one of the smartest philosopher/theologians in the history of our country, can be a very difficult read for people. There is a place for über-academic works on Edwards, but Kyle does a great job of taking complex thoughts/concepts and explaining them in a way that allows more people to appreciate the great mind of Edwards. The second way the book is helpful is it captures the devotional life for us as not just what we do in private but how a vital faith is lived out. Edwards was not only a brilliant thinker but his Christian faith was deeply devotional. While much of modern Christianity tends to split good thinking and emotions (head/heart split) Edwards seems to seamlessly connect the two. The life of the mind is important because it serves to help us make good distinctions in order to live well. As Kyle rightly emphasizes, the devotional life is a life of wisdom. The book is helpful in a third way - it's not just an exposition on Edwards. It actually led to an exploration of my heart. I've had that same refreshing experience with a book I read recently about Mother Teresa. As Kyle spends the first three chapters laying the foundation of Edward's devotional life, I sensed my own heart stirring in a like manner. It's one thing for a writer to merely explain. It's a whole different thing for the reader to be taken into the narrative, to have his/her heart stirred. This book is a great example of not only explaining Edwards but also offering us an "ethos", an emotional connecting to Edwards' spiritual thoughts and practices that leads to a transformed heart. There are a few details I appreciated followed by two quick suggestions. The first detail I appreciated, Kyle gives us a clear picture of Edward's foundational beliefs in the first three chapters - God's glory, God's beauty, and the sense on the heart in affection where one's heart is

gripped by and rests in the gospel of Christ. This is absolutely critical because rather than beginning with the actual practices, Kyle begins with the gospel as it must get into the deepest recesses of the heart rather than one jumping immediately into the practices. Second, I agree with Kyle that the disciplines/practices are not the way to be good or to fix ourselves or to even try and do something/anything. This is an important distinction to make contra how many of the basic "disciplines" are presented today. The "disciplines" or "practices" are means of grace - ways to open more deeply in honesty to our own depravity and the immense love of God. Bravo for keeping everything in the right order! Two quick suggestions are in order. The first is (and I could be wrong), I couldn't find any description of biblically what the immaterial heart represents. Just as concepts like "glory", "beauty" and "affection" are explained, I think it's important to unveil a robust picture of the heart, as Edwards understood it. There's a reason why Edwards focuses on the heart, particularly in Religious Affections that I think is important to the discussion. Maybe Kyle included it and I just didn't see it... My last suggestion would be to offer some devotional exercises after each chapter. Particularly as the chapter "Spiritual Disciplines as Means of Grace" begins to examine some critical practices, it would be very helpful to have something like a daily exploration of how Edward's spiritual theology would work itself out in one's life. So in addition to having three exercises in the appendices (which are very helpful), having some questions to reflect on with God at the end of each chapter would actually help readers engage even more with the material. In summary, this book does what it proposes to do and it represents the best of what the written words of others should offer: Holiness that is not a five-step plan to a better life. My recommendation? Read it. Then re-read it. Then give it away to others. As a pastor of spiritual formation, I fully intend to use this resource in the future. Kudos Kyle! 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A superb book on spiritual formation By Shane Copeland "For many, the Christian life has been so oriented around themselves and fixing their problems that 'growth' necessarily entails seeng yourself as holy, good and true. Edwards tells us a different story. There are two divergent emphases that drive Edwards'understanding of the Christian life. First is the idea of true growth, which is greater dependence upn God. Second is the idea that as we grow we become more aware of our depravity." I've read a number of books on spiritual disciplines and formation over the past 10-15 years. A lot of have been helpful and challenging, but most of them tread similar territory. Kyle Strobel does something a little different by reaching back to Jonathan Edwards: he casts the journey of formation through a Reformed theological perspective. He does this by breaking the book into two parts: the vision and the practical. Both are helpful. In the first part, Strobel, through Edwards, holds up the love, beauty and glory of God as our "destination." He states, "Spiritual formation, Edwards tells us, is about learning the song we will sing for eternity." And, "as the saint comes to know God, and the union between them grows greater and greater for eternity, the saint is upheld and made fully himself or herself. God's purpose is not to overtake us, but to fill us with his life and love. God calls us to partake in the

happiness he has known for eternity past and will continue to know for eternity future." Knowing your destination gives you what you need for the journey in this earthly life. The second part is answering the question of "How do we learn this song?" That is what spiritual disciplines are for. Here Strobel is especially helpful. He recasts the disciplines as Means of Grace. And rather than seeing the disciplines as a way towards self-improvement, he shows how they are really postures that we take in humbling oursevles to God in faith, so that we might receive his grace to see him in all of his beauty and glory. Again, using Edwards, he gives several examples, but focuses on the Word of God and Prayer. From there, he gets even more practical with Edwards in how we might incorporate means of grace in our lives. All of this has a purpose: "...if Edwards did have an obsession, it was the beauty and glory of God. Ultimately, Edwards grasp of spiritual formation centers on the idea that God is beautiful and glorious, and he calls us to share in that beauty and glory" (p.15-16). See all 27 customer reviews...
