Review Reviewed by Lori M for Readers Favorite After reading this book, I wanted to find Nutmeg and hug her and comfort her, but it appears that after all she went through in her life, she is now a mature, well-balanced young woman, thanks to the Children's Garden. I can't imagine an eight year old child who had already been put through seven failed adoptions. One can only imagine how she learned to cope and survive through manipulations and tantrums. The family that eventually adopted her must have a heart of gold and the patience of saints. This story is well-written, inspirational, sad, happy, funny, and just a delightful read. I can't imagine all of the other Nutmegs out there who don't get the chance to go to a place like the Children's Garden where they can thrive and learn to trust again. In the Prologue, the author introduces us to the setting and the social worker who was instrumental in creating the Children's Garden. I like how the author wove the stories of several staff members and children into this story. It is admirable that she wrote this book in order to increase awareness of the pain and suffering of many American children. It must be very difficult for the social workers and other healthcare providers to teach a child how to trust again and feel safe. This is a wonderful read for anyone, from the everyday person and the pastor, all the way to the psychologist. It is one of those stories that, I'm sorry, is really true, but happy that I had the pleasure to read. About the Author Jacqui Kelley-Kinnie is a retired psychologist who worked with children for more than a thirty-five year career in schools, treatament agencies and clinics. A mother of four daughters, she often says she learned more at a California Agency called Children's Garden than in graduate school classes. Here she was introduced to the horrors and deep scars of child abuse - emotional, physical and sexual - and the theories of attachment in which the agency based its extensive

treatment. Jacqui writes poetry, short stories and fantasy. Nutmeg is a fictional novel, but it is based in reality and she hopes it portrays the possibilities that once did and still can exist to help those abused in our midst.

NUTMEG BY JACQUI KELLEY-KINNIE PDF

Books about abused and emotionally disturbed children are usually clinical and professional in nature; they seldom engage a reader’s curiosity, heart and funny bone all at the same time. Nutmeg, the story of one such child and the help and solace offered her through a network of caring people, is not so much a clinical study as a beautifully told story of one bright, angry and lovable young child and her journey to well-being. In a healing setting where John Bowlby’s attachment theory abounds, young Nutmeg learns to trust, attach to those she learns to love and to empathize with others. Her disturbed behaviors slowly and surely diminish and her tremendous love of life thrills the reader as her voyage to adoption into a “forever family” becomes a reality. This book is filled with accessible information about the lives of children locked in the world of foster care, facing the challenges of our legal system and dealing with memories and people from a troubled and frightening past. ● ● ● ●

A fascinating story By Joan Reid A fascinating story by Mary Coleman MD Nutmeg is a compelling story that keeps the reader very interested and turning the pages. It is a clearly written and moving story of the journey of a young girl born to a disoriented schizophrenic mother and removed from her care at 3 months of age after the mother mutilated the child's finger. The abuse continued and continued in a series of foster homes until the child finally is placed with a sophisticated agency and eventually adopted by an extraordinarily supportive family. This book contains remarkable insight about Nutmeg's process of thinking and reacting as she goes through these experiences; it also discusses the positive pleasures and negative burdens of the staff inside an adoption agency and the limitations of their work. This book illuminates the reader about a number of contemporary issues -- how does a child come to terms with abandonment by her parent, can a white family successfully adopt a biracial child, what are the identity problems of any adopted child both when younger and later during adolescence and adulthood, and most importantly, can such a repeated abusive beginning in the early years ever be satisfactorily overcome and by what methods? This book is a tribute to a truly remarkable person, someone who named herself "nutmeg." 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nutmeg By judewys This is an incredible story of life's journey taken by a young girl. A must read. The author has captured this young girl's story in a way that will capture your heart. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Heart-touching By Jay Y. Gonen, Ph.D. This novel elucidates what a difficult struggle it is for abused or abandoned children who are wards of the state to gain successful placements in foster homes or, even better, to be adopted by a loving family. The children's future is at stake, based on efforts by both the children and adults which frequently involves setbacks and heartbreaks. This is a psychologically sophisticated tale

that vividly illustrates the difficulties faced by all parties concerned. The children's search for secure attachment and cohesive identity, the care-givers hopes and frustrations, and the legal authorities mix of human compassion with blindness and bias, are all portrayed in a convincing fashion. It is therefore easy for readers to empathize with the protagonists whether children or adults. All this turn this novel into a heart-touching story and an artistic success.
