Outstanding Historical Work By Janet Mackin, EdD, RN Florence Nightingale, Feminist provides the reader with a new and interesting history of this amazing woman. Extensive use of primary source documents provides the book with both a scholarly foundation as well as more personal connection with Ms. Nightingale. Even for one who has read extensively about her, I was amazed about the many new facts that I learned. After reading the book, I felt like I knew her intimately. The book makes a good read as a biography but it could also be used as a text for a course on nursing history. This book is a gift to the nursing profession. It is comprehensive and gives a true picture of the founder of the profession. Nightingale in terms of nursing, the Crimean War, and Lady with the Lamp. But Cromwell beautifully tells this story and so much more - how Nightingale chose not to live the destined lifestyle of an upper class English woman, but instead, despite the strong wishes of her family, the social climate of her day and her own very precarious health, became a monumental and beloved figure. This story of Nightingale's passion, difficulties, successes and very important friendships is a remarkable work of scholarship, told with great compassion and clarity, a most insightful recounting of Florence Nightingale's journey. It contained so much I did not know about this remarkable woman. I could hardly put it down! A persevering woman who defied her times to introduce the public to hygiene, germ control and cleanliness. It is amazing to read about the conditions before Ms Nightingale took over in the Crimea and then in England. She is an inspiration not only to nursing students but to all of us because of her persistance in doing what she knew was right in hospitals and anywhere where injured soldiers or sick people were.
