By David Injerd I found out about this series (The Prentice-Hall automotive technology series) when I searched for info on modern verhicles and how the combustion and emissions control system and components function, which led me first to purchase a new copy of Automotive Fuel and Emissions Control Systems. I was so impressed with it that I have subsequently purchased a number of other books in the series, this one included. This specific title is the overall "Big Picture" book in the series and it is packed with a wealth of useful info, even for part-time mechanics such as myself who started working on cars fifty years ago. Not only does it cover your basics, like engine components that haven't changed over the years, but it also covers the "New Stuff" like Hall-effect sensors in the distributor and Mass Air Flow Sensors in the Intake System. Reading the text gives one a good idea about how they funcion, which then enables educated troubleshooting. As an added bonus, the book is rife with anecdotes and maintenance tips, such as the tactic of placing short sections of vacuum tubing in-line with each plug wire at the distributor, then individually and sequentially shorting these tube sections with a grounded screwdriver blade to determine if any of the cylinders are not contributing their expected share to the power generated by the engine. Neat technique that I never knew about and that actually works! I purposely purchased this old copy (Second Edition of 2003) because I predominantly work on
older vehicles, which this covers just fine. I suspect the latest edition has more modern material but I note that quantum jumps in technology have NOT occurred when I work on new vehicles; what is covered here is still fairly applicable to most components and systems used in cars sold today. For those young guys and gals using this book for classroom study, which a LOT of automotive programs do across the nation, you must purchase the latest edition. But for those of you searching for "up-to-date" (compared with pre-'90s cars) general automotive info, an older edition will be just fine. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
